My least favorite thing about Gen-X is their selective treatment of anime and JRPGs. They have near boomer levels of dismissiveness with ad-hoc rationale that comes from a cursory knowledge of the mediums (this is a

Gen-Xers seem to realize they were born and lived in a weird bubble culturally and seem to treasure what they had as a teenager/young adult with reverence while boomer, millennial, and zoomer nostalgia is all more infantile (slight exception to boomers with jam band culture.) That doesn't make them more mature, at all. I think they just had
SMURF -all to remember in the 70s and want to relive being a teen/young adult to stick it to the man.
They were at the opening of the gates of COOL JAPAN and chose to move on and obsess over 80s blockbusters for the rest of their lives like reasonable adults.

This is one of those exceptions (it's just an EP) personally curated by Daddy Satan himself.
They have the grindcore stuff down hard. They aren't as frantic (which is to be predicted) as you'd expect it to be (it's for a structural reason) but that doesn't make them loose their punchiness because of how well everything is mixed and the symphonic and, I want to say, jazzy bits are delicious flourishes. Even when you think it starts to get a bit too grandiose, there are some harsh or dissonant beats to ground it.
I know I usually harp on synths (though I'm not a
glub ing expert at identifying them) but again, it's an issue of mixing (and a lot of this album rides the line of electronica.) If these are synths, I can't tell- but it doesn't matter. The traditional instruments hear sound beautiful and crisp. Some of the parts remind me of a JRPG soundtrack (durr hurr nerd hears classical music and thinks JRPG - literally me-on-
M E X before.
)
I want to say it's really easy to take an idea like this and phone it in but this doesn't feel like it. It doesn't feel like a gimmick, it feels like they actually give a shit about the composition. Probably because one of the dudes involved in the project had experience with progressive metal.

Improvised nonsense or the abstract always comes out a lot better. I have a bad problem with the pressure I exert with my utensil- if I was classically trained, it'd probably be one of the first things addressed. My loosey-goosey drawings have me making very light strokes which have a wide variety of textures and can make more swift movements. When I try to draw seriously, the lines are very thick and angular, like the Caliborn maymay. I wonder if that exact line of thought came from Hu¢¢ie's early experience as a sped kid learning to draw (I still use a static tripod grip which is again, part of why I use a specially thick mechanical pencil)
