The claim that a piece of media was “too political” is a common one found on the Internet, and it’s one that rightly irritates people. It's vague and elusive as to what it actually means. Yet whenever it’s said, there’s a common refrain that’s parroted that goes relatively unchallenged, which is that “all media is political”, or that all forms of media have political undertones that can be found if you look hard enough.
On the surface, I agree with this.
People have political opinions. Authors are people. Therefore, it’s more likely than not that there will be political messages in most pieces of media that you can find if you look hard enough. We’re only human, and most likely the author’s bias slipped in somewhere, even if they didn’t mean it. And it can be valuable to analyze this aspect.
But what bugs me is that whenever this is argued, it’s not from a point of genuinely wanting to analyze how political scenarios influence media of the time. It’s used as a cheap gotcha, and the implications of the claim aren’t examined. It’s been over-simplified to the point of meaninglessness, and having… unsavory implications. So let’s actually dig into this claim, what it means, and why I think it’s flawed with the way it’s argued.
For starters, it’s a sensible claim, but it’s also unfalsifiable. It'd be impossible to comb through literally every single piece of media ever made to determine if it's true or false. That being said, common sense would say that there most likely are political subtexts that can be found in most works. Yet it’s still unfalsifiable.
Also, no fucking shit, media can have political undertones. This isn’t some profound, insightful wisdom. It’s common sense. Yet, the “everything is political” argument is propped up as some astounding truth, when it’s just a simple fact of analysis, like I stated above. If someone is complaining about how the political messages were handled with a work, or saying they disagreed with a political message, saying “all media is political”… is just a non-sequitur. Of course, most media has political messages. How does that apply to how certain media executes their messages?
Second, it’s a blanket statement, given that “political” is a very broad term that can mean anything, depending on who you ask. It’s like saying “all media is about atoms because everything is made of atoms”. It’s simply not useful for analyzing media, again, unless you mean it in the sense that there could be political subtexts.
Third, it ignores the fact that some media focuses more on politics than others. Let’s take Get Out, for instance. It’s a highly political work that touches on real-world issues and sociology. Compare that to SpongeBob. Now, SpongeBob does have its fair share of political commentary. But to place both under the banner of “political works” is ridiculous, since one has a clear political message first and foremost, and the other has politics take a backseat.
(Or for an even more infamous example, find a political message in “Cow Tools”. Go ahead, I dare you to try and find one and return with your sanity intact.) (EDIT: I'll be damned, u/dale_glass

But my biggest issue with this claim is that it’s reductive. To view media as nothing more than political mouthpieces or statements removes a great deal of nuance. Not all stories should be read as political statements, and doing so casts all media as propaganda.
EDIT: I realize in hindsight I didn't word this part as well as I could have. My concern with the claim is that if you take it to an extreme level, you end up viewing art as means to convey specific political messages. I don't mean to say that merely claiming that "media is political" is viewing art as propaganda; I realize I may have come across as saying that. I mean to say taking it to an absurd degree leads to a mindset where you view all media as primarily carrying political messages, when the political aspect may not have been the focal point. I have seen people who take this claim to such a degree, although I would wager they're not a majority.
This last point irks me the most, as whenever I see someone say “all media is political!”, it seems like they’re trying to prove themselves right by saying a blanket statement that can’t be proven wrong. It’s a common sense claim used in bad faith to sound more profound than it really is, and I believe its misuse has led to people overlooking the kernel of truth in the claim, that most media has political undertones that can be found if you look hard enough.
People using it don't want to analyze media to see how the creator's political views influenced it. They use it as a gotcha, which is a shame, because it really is an interesting field, but it's been misused to the point of becoming a cliche.
TL;DR: The claim that "all media is political" absolutely has merit to it. Most media has political undertones that can be found if you look for it. My problem isn't with the point itself, but rather how it's argued and devolved. If you'll let me wax poetic, the male ideal (in physical form) is a lot more consistent than the females because a lot of female beauty is seen in the physical features of the face (which is slightly more culturally relative though I do believe there is an objective human ideal underpinning them; for instance, the easy example is that symmetry is always desired) while the male ideal is more about the body and things that we actively control about the body- muscularity.
And while there are slight variations on what muscles were the most prioritized in what place of the world and what time period, it's certainly a lot harder to distinguish than the features on the faces of the "most beautiful
wwomen of the world."
That's my theory on why I think (and humanity, for the most part) is more compelled towards the male figure's aesthetic. Perhaps as a grounded social phenomenon to the more "ethereal" feminine ideal and while both are achievable- and equally fleeting- the male version is more controllable. A sort of an inherent dichotomy balancing any given society's understanding of beauty. "Man shapes his tools and in turn, his tools shape him." Something something, semiotics. Just a thought.

Finally wrapped up Astlibra Revision, and it was about as backtrack-heavy as I expected. Not that Odin Sphere or Muramasa are innocent of this either, but eesh.
Combat is fun and there are like, 7 or 8 ways to "Level Up" so there is plenty to distract from revisiting locales, at least.
If (You) ever decide to play, there's a permanent item that lets you warp to previous save points hidden behind the tavern, grab that early.
Apparently Astlibra was originally released episodically, so it plays an OP between every chapter. The scenarios themselves are a mix of charming and déjà vu. In your career as a gamer, you might recall visiting a seaside village that offers maidens to a giant serpent, or storming the Demon King's castle, or foiling a plot to harness ancient superweapons, so on. Vanillaware’s own titles often feel like a pastiche of their influences (fairy tales, folklore, or classic sci-fi), but Astlibra leans more into video game and anime pop homage directly.
KEIZO has probably played even more games than I have, so I can’t fault him that much. The time fuckery at least adds enough wrinkles to keep things fresh. For an episodic structure, it still does a decent job of establishing the cast while gradually hinting at the larger plot, so it was pretty deftly strung together.
However, for a game that stretches around 50 hours (a 2D ARPG at that), it could have used an "everyday life" sequence at the start to build some proper rapport between the player and the osananajimi they’ll be chasing for the entire game.
We get a few short flashbacks, but they’re so ephemeral. Okay, she talked to MC, they saw some flowers together, the demons attacked and… what else? What’s she actually like? She’s got blonde twintails, so maybe that’s all some folks need to white knight forever
More amusingly, there are a few occasions where the game lampshades the silent MC's borderline obsessive devotion, including an NTR-tinged dream sequence right out of
Her (2013). The means by which he finally recues his childhood friend in the end is hilariously demented, too, I loved it.
