Mental illness doesn’t actually exist. Like, yeah, you can be mentally unwell, but that’s the fault of you being mistreated. Mental illness profiles are normalfags taking the symptoms of people who are literally born bad and irreversibly disabled and smacking them onto their betters as an act of petty vengeance, and now the entire internet supports it.

you're correct to recognize that all mental illness is "made up", in the sense that conditions and their diagnostic criteria are invented and can be changed or discarded entirely. the purpose of classification is utility; it doesn't change reality.

and yes, sometimes the designation of mental illness is given harmfully to people who are really just being mistreated. but not everybody's personal mental troubles can be resolved reasonably or effectively by a more accommodating environment, right?

again with this "subsuming reality" stuff. you make it sound like people are looking at fancy food pictures instead of eating food, when in reality, the two are probably correlated - people who follow food accounts are probably people who like to either cook or seek out high quality/unique foods. not to mention, food styling and photography is partially its own art. >people who follow food accounts are probably people who like to either cook or seek out high quality/unique foods.

Cooking as a hobby and posting images of what you made online is much less problematic. I was thinking of wwomen who go to cafes/restaurants and take pictures of what they ordered, which I think you're being very charitable describing as "seeking out high quality/unique foods". There are also gimmick cafes that seem to cater to this type of person. Saying that styling food is art is like saying that fashion is art, I think we had an argument about that before and I don't think I can be convinced that it has more than the slightest accidental merit.

>>81816
>I was thinking of wwomen who go to cafes/restaurants and take pictures of what they ordered
this is the most common angle, and what I was expecting rather than your "erosion of truth/meaning" take. basically that it's a little silly to post photos of your food at the big trendy restaurant when your photos are identical to everyone else's, and I do think sometimes those photos serve as a form of conspicuous consumption signaling (look how trendy I am for getting the hot new thing!)
on the other hand:
- people may do this because they enjoy cataloguing experiences to look back on later, and don't see the point in making it private
- if the primary focus of the account is food, this can still act as a sort of curation of their taste which is useful. I follow some accounts that post almost exclusively photos (and sometimes text reviews) of japanese ramen shops, and I find that it serves as a source of ideas and inspiration for my own work in the kitchen
>Saying that styling food is art is like saying that fashion is art
I think this is actually different in a meaningful way. there's probably some small amount of social/cultural signaling present in food photography, like any form of art, but I would say that most food photography is much more practical - the point is to make the food look good, much of which comes down to things like color & lighting, or shininess, arrangement, etc. which is subjective, sure, but it's more rooted than something like fashion, where the goals are very cultural and can shift dramatically in comparatively small spans of time. it may be much closer to something like model photography imo

That's very true, which in turn leads to an erosion of truth/meaning as the signals come to overshadow what they originally signified.

>- people may do this because they enjoy cataloguing experiences to look back on later, and don't see the point in making it private

Sounds marginal.

>I follow some accounts that post almost exclusively photos (and sometimes text reviews) of japanese ramen shops, and I find that it serves as a source of ideas and inspiration for my own work in the kitchen

I think that's mostly okay, there's probably a lot of overlap, some followers I imagine would just look at the pictures and then order trash from Uber Eats.

"Curating taste" is something I've heard used to defend the 4x4 game charts before, I think it's most important to clarify for what purpose you're "curating taste". For some practical purpose (such as recommending things to other people), or just to show off how cultured you are? (Sounds like mostly the former in the case of these ramen accounts)

>most food photography is much more practical

Fair enough, I agree. What I meant was that these "amateur food photographers" aren't artists (unless they cooked the food themselves), similar to how most people who like "fashion" aren't engaging with clothes artistically, even though there is some artistry in fashion design.

yeah, I think this is the point I would agree on the most, though I'm generally less critical of "self-image curation" than you, in the form of something like fashion.

that said, while these "taste charts" are still often an exercise in self-presentation, they can still often tell you something about that person, or at the very least give you a bunch of potential things to talk about, like I mentioned before. in this sense, I agree pretty strongly with MoM's perspective. yes, sharing a bunch of your cultivated tastes can be performative, but the presentation as a chart has basically no impact on that. it's no different than someone in a bar listing off their favorite bands, to try and signal something about themselves. sure, we can poke fun at the way someone's taste may appear "tryhard" or too focused on self-identity rather than some sort of idealized "unbiased" enjoyment of the art, but at the end of the day, it's not a terrible topic for conversation at all. I don't think you can ever escape this potential for "taste cultivation" unless you eliminate the opportunity for individuality or preference entirely

I actually think a context like duolicious makes it especially excusable, since finding something interesting to talk about with somebody you don't know anything about yet is infamously challenging. in that context, the chart not only gives you the indirect information of "here is the kind of taste I present myself as having", it also gives you the direct actionable information of "here are a bunch of games I love - if you know about any of them, you can probably strike up a decent conversation with me"

I would rather people talked about nothing than about superficial lies, but I also don't think signalling ought to be socially necessary, even online.

>I don't think you can ever escape this potential for "taste cultivation" unless you eliminate the opportunity for individuality or preference entirely

I think "individuality" is much more than superficial aesthetics, and I'm sad that many have reduced themselves to a carrd.co.

>finding something interesting to talk about with somebody you don't know anything about yet is infamously challenging

Is it really? You probably won't agree, but I think this is just a consequence of extreme social promiscuity online, leading to an unwillingness to invest effort into each conversation.

I have had many worthwhile conversations with people where I just ask them about something they like which I know nothing about. I would say it actually makes it easier when you can ask questions from a position of innocence rather than "do you like X? oh yeah same". For me at least, because it's hard to navigate shared interest conversations without signalling.

yes and no. I'm not advocating for people to start carrying around "interest cards" and handing them out to people before talking or anything. but for a dating website, where users have to filter through loads of users and getting that conversation rolling in one or two messages (and standing out too) are really important, I think it can work well. I would certainly much rather have a chart to work with than have to start with a dead-in-the-water opener like "so, do you listen to music much?" (again, this would be a fine opener in person, and I've had fun conversations with coworkers that have started like this)

that's not to say that these aspects of online dating/socialization are desirable, but I think including a single taste chart is a reasonable action in response

>I would rather people talked about nothing than about superficial lies

"here are some things I really like" is not a "superficial lie". people don't generally overtly lie on a chart like this, at most they'll selectively prioritize the placement of things they like which project a certain type of image

>I think "individuality" is much more than superficial aesthetics

okay, but taste cultivation applies to basically every aspect of a person's expression. the way they dress, the things they profess to like, the way they speak, the words they choose, the things they deem worth talking about, they way they carry their body, the things they choose to do in their freetime.
all of these things function as signals, and they generally don't replace the person's individuality, they extend it from something intangible to something that exists in their behavior.

reworded more succinctly - you cannot really prevent "image signaling" because any form of behavior which varies from person to person is subject to developing cultural associations. and it's extremely unlikely for someone to exist in a culture without being affected by those associations, even if they recognize some of them and personally disavow what they see as superficial

 No.81855>>81856

I don't know if it's anything lime what you're talking about, but whenever something comes up in a conversation, and I don't know what it is, I always ask instead of looking it up myself. Aside from possibly getting something wrong from how many possible meanings there are for things, I feel like I can learn a lot about a person simply from how they talk about it. Sometimes I even ask when I already know what it is. Like if they describe the term with contempt or joy, for example, I get a better idea of their character depending on what that thing is

 No.81856

I agree! it's usually fun to just ask them if it's a casual conversation and not something they would feel burdened by explaining
etiquette is understandably a bit different on internet forums typically, but I'm never really pulling out my phone to look something up mid-conversation (unless it's to answer a question that we're both curious about, and then usually the answer opens up new doors in the conversation too)

started making a game topsters :outy:BIZNASTY:outy: on one I have saved from 1.5 years ago. I find this much more difficult than the music topsters - to make the music chart, I went back and skimmed through many different albums to re-assess my opinion of them, but for games, that's just not really feasible. there are loads of games that I've enjoyed but haven't played in many years, and I didn't play them multiple times or easily categorize them as "masterpiece" then it's really hard to feel confident about throwing them onto the chart

I think it's a lie, because I don't think about a game much after I play it. Even if I enjoyed a game a lot, I wouldn't pretend I continue to enjoy it or that it defines me in any way.

>you cannot really prevent "image signaling" because any form of behavior which varies from person to person is subject to developing cultural associations.

I think we should discourage people from signalling intentionally, deceptively, and to an excessive degree. I don't think illusion should be destroyed so only reality exists, I just don't like it blending with and replacing reality.

If someone is tall and that sends a signal that they're strong and they get more respect from others, cool whatever. If someone breaks their legs to look taller, no we shouldn't do that.

have also been doing a "1 per series" rule for this chart, which meant re-litigating mother 2 vs mother 3.
last time I had chosen mother 3 - I'm a sucker for rhythm game mechanics, and mother 3's expansive soundtrack is so much fun. but this time, I found myself learning more towards mother 2. what mother 3 gained in its "tighter" narrative was basically total abandonment of the wandering "you're on your own, kid" adventure feel that defined mother 1, and that was retained to a pretty significant degree in mother 2. that aspect of the series is less flashy than more obvious gameplay features, but I think after some additional space from both games I'm finding myself valuing it even more than before

Here I went.

Rather /v/ core, still.
But these are the games that memorably moved me to tears. From little snot to sour fart, I've always been a bit of a crybaby. Since there's so many ways to make me cry, I've arranged them in rows by how each plucked at my heartstrings.
1 Pride: All feature stirring "everyone is cheering for the hero, go for it!" moments. The heart swells!
2 Relief: (All the VNs) Happy tears born of relief once all the trials have passed. Terrangima being the odd one out, here, since that it was more of a "What have I done?" kind of cry.
3 Naivety: Stuff I've hopefully outgrown. Symphonia seems like cheap melodrama today, I was 6 for Pokemon Silver, BMD 15% run almost broke my gamer spirit, and Ragnarok Online was real people related.
4 Loss: Include a heartfelt, potentially too abrupt farewell with your NPC-companion.
5 Regret: Have moments where characters apologize for being such a fuckup failure. That gets me every time.

If it ever gets finished, Viscaria will certainly capture the central slot. The demo alone already hits like three of the subcategories.

I was reminded of this game. Despite the generic graphics, clumsy UI and fantasy setting, it's very creative. For example murder is a mechanic, there's a class that gives you a bonus for spelling curse words (including the DERSITE word) and you can get Old English letters. This makes me feel like any game can be fun so long as a smart person puts effort into it. It's more novel, everyone has seen "find the note with 4 numbers and use it to unlock the safe" before. You can design much more complex and interesting puzzles when you build off rules you intentionally teach the player, rather than building off common sense assumptions like "if I look around I'll find the key to unlock the door". There's only so much you can do with that and most of it has already been done.

thoughts on disgaea 1 vs 2? fallout 1 vs 2?

 No.82018>>82023

>>82017
I like Disgaea 2 the way I like Tekken 2. I think the way they reuse original assets while taking things in a different direction is really interesting. They couldn't really recapture the dark and whimsical nature of the first Disgaea, so they went with a b@d@$$ tone for the second. You didn't ask, but for Tekken 2, there's this sort of elevation of tone that I really like. I can't quite describe it, but I think it does "realistic dark" better than Tekken 4 tried to do. I think that one went too far and forgot about suspending disbelief.

As for Fallout 2, I think it's a little too long compared to the first game. I think Fallout 1 is just the right length. Additionally, they made some gameplay changes in 2 that I felt like weren't quite as fun. The whole thing with armor piercing rounds and hollow point in 2 is weird to me and I don't know why they did it because it makes the early game more difficult if you chose to specialize in guns.

 No.82019

Oh, and I think stuff like tower attacks were a much needed change for Disgaea 2. It feels like a game where they got a lot of good feedback and really wanted to improve on the gameplay. People are mixed on the story, but I like it. I think a plainer story is fine if the gameplay is that much better.

good take RE: disgaea 2. I'm not as fond of it because it lost the dark whimsy of 1 and its cast which was just irresistable, but at the same time, it was mechanically better than 1 in many ways.

I haven't played fo1/fo2 in a long time, though I think I remember feeling similar to you about the length. usually when my friends discuss fo1 vs fo2 it's about the tone (fo1 being more grounded, fo2 being more wacky)

I haven't played more than 15 minutes of any of the other games, sorry (^^:::;)
I really strongly prefer 2D art to 3D art, with the exception of faux-2D like the modern guilty gear games, which I think also looks great.

back when I played more "seriously" (I was never very good), my best character was ken, though I think that was just a reflection of me having a better grasp on their simple toolset than some of the other characters. I was also starting to pick up Q at that time and was having a lot of fun with them. if I can get my fighting game friends to try out 3rd strike, I'll probably run through all the characters again and maybe pick out some new ones. I felt considerably less strongly about the various 3rd strike characters than in other fighting games, to be honest. not sure why.

these days I mostly (occasionally) play kof02um, since that's the game my friend likes playing, and they're very hesitant to branch out

>Can you explain why the Mario franchise appeals to you, how much of it is nostalgia? I never understood this.

despite how it may look, I don't really have any fondness for mario as a character, or the core "mario IP". before nintendo got really serious about image and started locking things down, mario and its associated properties got a decent amount of high-budget experimentation that produced some really interesting games:

- paper mario ttyd and m&l superstar saga are both really stylish RPGs with a big cast of totally original locations, characters, and plotlines, plus unique additions to their battle systems
- yoshi's island is a platformer polished to near perfection, with tons of unique mechanics and a timeless artstyle. perhaps the most "traditional" pick of my mario selections
- wario land 3 is a really unique puzzle-platformer where you actually don't have health; instead, enemies afflict special status effects that you need to use to explore the level and find treasures
- luigi's mansion has a very unique central gameplay thrust in the way the vaccuum works, but for me it's incredibly memorable because of the exploration aspect and its careful attention to atmosphere
- super mario sunshine is up there because I really enjoyed the twists it placed on the 3D "open world" mario line (shared by 64 and galaxy), and it has a soundtrack and style that are just very fun, supported by pretty solid platforming. though I have nostalgia for all the games in this list, this one is probably the most boosted by nostalgia for me - sunshine is reviled by many for its hit-and-miss gimmicks and features like the hover nozzle which muddle the refined simplicity of sm64's platforming

As you probably guessed from my game list, I play Dan. I just like the weird flow of his moves and they made him fun in V. Another favorite from that game is F.A.N.G., one of the strangest characters I've ever seen. Funnily enough, I always liked Ken, but almost never played him in V. I played him a lot in the Alpha games though. Sakura was another favorite. I guess I tend to like characters who sort of copy other characters but put their own spin on it.

As for KoF, I feel like I enjoy playing as way more characters for some reason. I like playing as Ryo, Terry, Andy, Mai, Yuri, King, Kyo, Benimaru, Leona, Whip, K', Kula, Shermie, Kim, Athena, Iori, and Shingo. I don't know. I hadn't thought about it much, but KoF characters are super appealing to me

me too! at least, I'm much more drawn to KoF characters from a character design perspective than I am in 3rd strike. it may just come down to taste, though I think KoF's character design is one of its strongest points for sure.

Also as for the games we both have, there's SFV, KoFXV, Tekken 7, Soul Calibur VI, Guilty Gear Xrd, Hawkgirl Mirror Match Looney Tunes (Injustice), SLAM (Injustice 2), and I tried Skullgirls and returned it to MoM's disappointment.

In SFV, MoM plays R. Mika (who'll totally make this look cool), Chun-Li, G, dabbled a bit with Guile, Sagat, Poison

In KoF XV, MoM played: Shermie, King, Blue Mary, Luong, Angel, Whip, and will probably play Sylvie Paula Paula and Hinako when I buy the DLC

In Guilty Gear Xrd, MoM played: Millia (main), Baiken (secondary), Dizzy, and Elphelt.

Soul Calibur VI was mainly goofing around with custom characters, and we haven't gotten to Tekken 7 yet.

MoM, I'll play skullgirls with you!!
I don't blame you for returning it - I want to like it more, but every time I try and put time into it, I end up getting frustrated by certain aspects of its design, mainly the long combo length. to me, the fact that the game (with dlc) has multiple different systems for breaking out of infinites is kind of an indictment of a game where really long combos are too routine/easy to execute. not that that's inherently bad, I think I just tend to prefer games with shorter strings. but I still want to play more skullgirls!
it's also kinda funny to me that you refunded it when it notoriously goes on sale for like $1.50, but :^p

I don't own KoF XV - I bought XIII because that was the last 2D one, but none of my friends ever bought it, so I still haven't played it… (´・ω・`)ショボーン

I see, thanks for explaining. I didn't realise some were RPGs. The only one I watched someone play before was Super Mario Sunshine, which I was told was the best Mario game (maybe they were trolling though). It did look interesting with the water mechanics, but I assumed most Mario games were generic "bing bing wahoo collect the coins" like Super Mario Wonder (which looks hilariously bad to me).
