On the music front, we're getting more familiar sounds with the synthisms and guitars; it doesn't feel as empty (or as some might call it, "atmospheric" as before) which is a plus. We're getting into riffs but they're pretty crappy. I want what the album had but like, compressed and this is just more generic rifdrege with oohs and aahs and SYNTHHHSSSSSSSS. I guess this is where the "Symphonic black metal (later)" started and let me tell you, not a fan. None of it is very dissonant either (which I suppose you can assume from the "symphonic" part but it'd be cool if there were some actually dissonant, noisy symphonic black metal- that'd be something worth listening to.)
I have to say that there are two types of metalheads that leads to different types of metal and this is something that can barely be explained away by genres. There are people that like metal because it sounds "epic" and there are people who like metal because it's "intense." Now there are a whole variety of "epic" as seen in the genres of heavy metal, power metal, slam, whatever, they can keep those. And there are different kind of intense like raw black metal, brutal death metal, grindcore, etc. But then there's this overlap where genres (especially the kosher ones described by Metallum) don't do you justice. When I'm going into something just called black metal with a barely descriptive review sitting at some pretty 80 with unhelpful descriptions like "gnarly, head-banging riffs", do I know if I'm getting first wave black metal (cold) or second wave black metal (actually good
), or some third other thing? No. No, I FUARKing don't. And granted, on Metallum, epic is a tag and even though it covers 700 bands, I think it is woefully underutilized.
This is why I hate anti-label dregs because I need labels if you guys are going to archive everything under the sun but not (meaningfully) review it. There is a big divide in metal in the kinds of "extremity" (really, "excess" would be more fitting) in metal so that even the interpretations of the extreme genres of black, death, and doom metal can easily have like, clearly different origin points and you won't know what the FUARK it is until you read a review (which aren't always helpful) or actually listen to it.
Now I'd advocate throwing heavy/thrash fusion tags around to alleviate this but that'd get people up in arms. So let the community shit out more labels and throw them around. I really want "cold" or "dissonant" in somewhere other than reviews (FUARK it, give bands tags, it doesn't even have to be genres) so I can avoid shit I DO NOT want and get stuff I do want. Because, right now, with Metallum, symphonic metal could easily mean Sigh (which is awesome) or this (which is less awesome.) And that's not just a difference in quality. It's qualitative. Using specific bands on Metallum or ChatGPT as a recommender is useful to an extent but you're at the mercy of retard brains and shit-out-of-luck if it's an obscure band. I guess this is the part where a circlejerk could come in to help but I don't have that and trying to find "metal friends" sounds FUARKing gay and tedious.
And granted, this isn't the worst thing in the world. It's not even the least unique thing in the world. But this is very riff-heavy and doesn't play to what I think the band's strengths (though they are still present) in the previous album were. It just sounds like some generic thrash-y black metal. And I will say, it does grow on you- or maybe it just gets better as it goes along. But seeing the reviews and the genre shift, I was presented with the FUARKing coinflip of what "symphonic" sound was going to be produced.
The kind I like (using the actual instruments) or synth Hell. I was unironically unsure which one it would be and it ended up more or less being the latter.
Needless to say, though, the people who like metal because it's "epic" are the ones ruining it by tipping their toes into the "intensity" sphere and attracting a bunch of shoegazey hipsters that hate riffs and love navel-gazing gravitas. Then those hipsters will make music. They will then claim that "metal was always like this and the other stuff (which is probably more than 60% of, let's say, black metal) is just unoriginal rehashes. And almost everything remotely pop culture about metal is its "epic" side, I'm looking at you, nu-Doom. FUARKing Reddit as FUARK.

This is definitely a lot more metal and "intense" metal specifically than their other two albums. Like, holy shit, there's blastbeats. Some lovely dissonance too. The atmosphere is still here (and yet the tempo is unrelenting), there's no dead air, the voices are relatively low in the mix (for the better), the piano and organ are used in harmony (as opposed to taking over the harmony from the metal instruments.) The production also seems weirdly good, maybe better than the later ventures, because there seems to be a lot of care put into the mixing. And that mixing helps the folk elements blend with the usually overbearing synths seamlessly. Just an effective musical effort all around. I saw some guy say this was the best of their three and, I was skeptical because he seemed to enjoy all of them, which, I'm sad to say isn't exactly my position, but he's right on the mark. Diamond in the rough, but hey, I'm glad it's here. Good shit.
Of course it's the only one where the full album doesn't have a single upload on JewTube. It's fine though. #CHARTED

Anyway, your obligatory Homestuck post for the month was that Hu¢¢ie's prototype names for all the Kids went from 3 to 6 in character length; "Dan" being first meaning he would be the main character. This explains why so many of the comic's conventions are thrown out the window when we get to Dave and why the Dave circlejerk hour was so strong and powerful in warping the comic- he had literally intended his self-insert to be the main character. Violet being last also synchs up with my idea that Jaspers was swapped out for Bequeral.
It's also not entirely possible that the comic would have started on 3/(4+5+6+=)15 but didn't because in his own words, Hu¢¢ie "didn't know what the FUARK he was doing with Flash." By the time he did the Beta, it was already April and so he chose the Kid with the name with four letters to start with and somebody coincidentally (or maybe it was planted, who cares) a name with four letters and so the nebulous and inconsistent naming convention was formed.
Just some speculation that you'd never heard from anyone else. Has to be worth something to someone in this fandom.
