I also had an epiphany last night about Watchmen and The Comedian's mask but it's so subtle and obscure that it might not be intentional.
When he's working overseas, he wears the domino mask (face with no eyes), when he's called in to work on New York, he's wearing a gimp mask (eyes without a face.) It goes to show the sadomasochistic nature of his amoral perspective (beyond the obvious connotation of the gimp mask.) It being an evolution from (face with no eyes) to (eyes without a face) to eventually both when he comes to realization shows him slowly becoming humanized through his relation to his nation- again, him being symbolic of America and by extension, nationhood itself- and sets the stage for his emotional turmoil in light of Ozymandias's plan.
