Don't know when I started with this one when it's office policy to start with the highest rated one with the most reviews (this is the second highest one with the same amount of reviews.)
But wow, honestly awesome stuff. The drums stand out as being absolute perfection- a snap boom and then an echoey kick to each of them. It's perfect for the kind of music this is. What is it? Well, it's hard to say. It has elements of doom, gothic, and black metal. How you orient those elements into phrasing is hard. There are a lot of songs where the basses are downtuned into a more traditional gothic sound and others where they're complete doomy sludge. Guitars come in and out. They also alternate from gothic echoes to more traditional black metal distortion.
Unlike that one sludge album, I don't think this has me reevaluating my lack of appreciation of doom metal; I wouldn't say I like it in spite of it being doom either, it's just a very specific kind of doom that I like. Blackened, gothic doom- which isn't exactly something that exists in spades.
Similar to the way that a TON of gothic metal sucks (although I love gothic rock), this is more like the sterling child of that genre. This album has synths. But it knows how to use synths- maybe my hesitation to try gothic doom was misguided- and that's by using the usual flat, piercing sound in conjunction with a wall of sound (which doom is very good with, I'd expect black metal to be too but it's not as much as a hallmark as with doom)
The vocals are mostly black metal but I suppose with a gothic undertone to them- "whisper screeches." A "cold" variation of the black metal screech (which I'm not usually a fan of) but here, they just work, partially because of the cadence of the vocals, partially because of the tempo and texture of the music.
There's also a good amount of diversity in the music given its disparate influences. All of which display some form of technical expertise in mixing- the soundscapes are sparsely hollow, the rhythm and progression remains both diverse and constant.
Sonically, I guess the ultimate lesson here is that "cool sounds" and pitch perfect mixing are really all you need to make "cold" (black) metal great even though this album is, musically, more than that because as I said before, I think the songs are rather well-composed.

And yes, don't even get me started on the fact that yes, all of the Beta kids know how to play an instrument and I think this was meant to be a dropped allegory about parental expectations (since learning an instrument is often a hobby enforced by a parent; see John and Rose's instrument of choice, even the EPIC SUBVERSION worked into GREEN kind of makes sense since she plays a traditional instrument for fun but really jams out with an electric guitar ) since Dave is the only one to have an active interest in doing it (it also being non-traditional which is meant to indicate something about Bro) and is (likely) the one who got all his friends into the jam sessions as a sort of indicator for his relationship with his Guardian.
I think this is also the origin of Fraymotifs and why music was something even half-assedly given symbolic weight in the first place.
But again, Dave is when Hu¢¢ie gets self-indulgent and GREEN is when Hu¢¢ie breaks all the rules to break the rules. It's still something worth thinking about- even if it's not this, exactly.

On favoritism, yes, I am trying to cultivate and protect a certain "tone" here. It's true. I don't want /hsg/ to have the texture you could find under shitpostbot4k on facebook or something (cough lurkey). Still, but I try to welcome any newcomer with a gentle understanding ear and and eye to their needs. I observed Sprunki's Madness Combat threads with curiosity, for example, and directed him to post in the general where other people might reply.
As for crushing anyone, more like a swat. A 48 hour ban from /hsg/ is hardly fatal. They even hopped on their phone and swatted me back immediately afterwards, deserved for me, since I could've offered a clearer explanation at the time.
Regarding "politics"
HSG has historically commented on the goings on in the outside world. Even if that is just to dismiss them as stupid. if we lose even that tether to reality… Seen uboachan recently?
I'm certainly not interested tone policing what falls past the "politics" line, so I would have to resign and leave toeing that line to somebody else.

This feels more like their first album but ultimately it feels less like a mash-up of genres and more of an ambient gothic rock project which is pretty good, all things considered- it's not like I'm disinterested in that. It's just not as interesting as the first album.
Not even sure if I even want their final album in my music playlist which is the greatest dishonor possible for an album that I listened to in-full to get.

I would argue, fundamentally, time travel always implies to some degree that the timeline is malleable. If it exists, you can change the future. Full stop.
But that doesn't exactly create the most coherent and enjoyable stories so we have a writerism (which does have some basis in physics, I'd imagine) that there is some variation allowed but that these are "Accidental changes" (in the Aristoltian sense) that doesn't change the essential qualities of the timeline (the end result that is intended to be changed.)
Then there's a third kind of thing which is pure hackery where everything in the universe avoids even the change of the substance of the timeline from happening by compelling everything in existence to bend around what the writer needs. It should be obvious that this is how the Alpha timeline is used in a lot of the comic.
It should also be clear that Hu¢¢ie went from the first kind of time travel to the second (doomed timelines) to the third over the course of the comic- without necessarily negating any previous incarnation. They all kind of exist side-by-side in disharmony.
Now I can see why Hu¢¢ie rejected the first model- he wanted, in his own words, very early out of the gate; "an analogue for Godhead PI" so the degree to which the timeline is malleable is always somewhat restricted. But he should have stopped right right there. The only restriction should have been that there is a past PI (Dave), present/Godhead PI (Dave), and future PI (Dave) at any given moment. A closed loop.

But we don't have that, because, for one, the first thing we see is Davesprite bullshit and a Dave getting himself killed. This kind of necessitates a transition to the second type of time travel and the concept of doomed timelines. Why did Hu¢¢ie feel the need to include these in the first place? It's unclear, I'm assuming that he was going to continue having Dave timetravel pre-Godtier in ways that were basically indefinite (Godhead PI), Davesprite represent past!Dave, and God-Tier Dave represent future Dave. Or something along those lines- physically different Daves as representations. Then he gave up on that when Dave time travel adventures were cut short in Act 5 Act 2 after he did nothing of any real significance with them and got emo over Bro and Terezi (which also unnecessarily involved Dave death to add to the convolution that is Mind powers and "Mind(?)" splinter timelines and infinite doomed timelines.)
This is frankly one of the more baffling parts of Homestuck to me which I see as a "big question." We know Hu¢¢ie very quickly got tired of the conceit of the comic of "it's a videogame" but did he really get tired of time travel- well, time travel in this selective manifestation. Why? It can be mentally exhausting but so were the 7,000 pages of apologetics that followed these very basic things and the additional mechanics he added. So, really, why did Dave stop time-traveling? You can give me the in-character reason but it's bullshit- it was clearly written in for the purpose of getting Dave to stop time-traveling and not for the purpose of the narrative. We can handwave any "timetraveling breaks the game" with Dave's personality already (just like we do Aradia.) So what, really, was the reason? I genuinely don't know.

This album was called "excellent" and given an 82% on Metallum in the same review(?!?!??!?!?!) Well, I'd say it's certainly a lot closer to the "82%" side of things…
It has a really good opening track and then the rest is just pretty generic.
I'm assuming that the delays between tracks and the dicsordant, random speaker spikes are just because of a shitty uploader with a shitty uploading method but they're something that keeps my attention- I thought they were deliberate at first.
Sometimes I forget that there's metal out there that isn't extreme metal. And that the people who listen to that stuff are some of the biggest dorks in the universe.
This is one of those semi-frequent reviews that I write mid-album. I'm contemplating whether or not to finish it. I've certainly finished worse albums both technically and from a song-making perspective. Should I add it to my playlist? Again, I've added worse. But something about this album in particular frustrates me. Maybe it's because I'm sleepy. Maybe I don't want to add it because it's competent to give people the idea that this is something I'm "into" instead of it obviously being bad enough for me to say "Well, it's a compendium thing…"
At least the whole album is in one single video.
It's good, I guess, for its thing. I don't know.
