The claim that a piece of media was “too political” is a common one found on the Internet, and it’s one that rightly irritates people. It's vague and elusive as to what it actually means. Yet whenever it’s said, there’s a common refrain that’s parroted that goes relatively unchallenged, which is that “all media is political”, or that all forms of media have political undertones that can be found if you look hard enough.
On the surface, I agree with this.
People have political opinions. Authors are people. Therefore, it’s more likely than not that there will be political messages in most pieces of media that you can find if you look hard enough. We’re only human, and most likely the author’s bias slipped in somewhere, even if they didn’t mean it. And it can be valuable to analyze this aspect.
But what bugs me is that whenever this is argued, it’s not from a point of genuinely wanting to analyze how political scenarios influence media of the time. It’s used as a cheap gotcha, and the implications of the claim aren’t examined. It’s been over-simplified to the point of meaninglessness, and having… unsavory implications. So let’s actually dig into this claim, what it means, and why I think it’s flawed with the way it’s argued.
For starters, it’s a sensible claim, but it’s also unfalsifiable. It'd be impossible to comb through literally every single piece of media ever made to determine if it's true or false. That being said, common sense would say that there most likely are political subtexts that can be found in most works. Yet it’s still unfalsifiable.
