In general though, I hate Westoid "vent" writing where everything is fine until it isn't and there's some big emotional blowout character moment with overbearing attempts at pathos. People can argue Sugar shit isn't that and, say, of course, Evangelion is and they'd be two, slightly varied degrees of wrong. I guess I'm sort of neurotic about this topic because the degree to which something is reasonably "plotted" vs. "there is a conflict present and it flares up" is sort of ambiguous and by its nature, debatable which I think is what makes this kind of writing, Sugar writing so frustrating.

For the record,

is somehow even less than this because the conflicts even existing in the first place is something that just kind of randomly pops up. Like, Eridan did not say a single
smurfing thing about Jack Noir (much less talk to him) before his flip-out. In-character, sure, whatever, and you can go on and on about to what extent foreshadowing or just any prior establishment is needed in a narrative like Woodstock's but it's easy to isolate and it's fine to isolate because nothing in Woodstock is that intricate or "moving" or whatever, these loose threads are all just a big nothing presented side-by-side in the end.

I don't know why I got the urge to write this out. There is no catharsis with any of this.

No.38282

TRICKSTERS both get off to it and intellectualize what is quite possibly the most depraved fetish.

I've held my tongue on dismissing other things, perhaps undeservedly, but when your plot synopsis is "These people are crazy and they start mutilating each other and having sex", I don't know, it kind of eats away at any good faith I have. I feel like a bunch of Tik Tok(? I feel old, I don't know where they'd come from) troonies came out of the woodwork because of their EDGE (because a dedicated subset of troons, who aren't all guro fetishists, love their edge and are the exact opposite of Deltarune wholesome 100 Saturday morning cartoon values at worst types) I look at the reviews and while they're consistently very polarized, it went from a more negative slant to a more positive slant as the years went on with there being a lot more reviews per year. It does the opposite of hyping someone up.

No.38885
>>38880Savescumming is bad because the save/load interface is usually clumsy or unpleasant to use, so the playing experience doesn't flow as well. It also inverts the psychological stakes of a tense encounter and difficulty becomes tedium. Fire Emblem added the turn wheel where you can rewind as many turns as you like and visually see the outcome, but you can only use it a limited number of times per battle which preserves some tension. >>38885Again, I just kind of disagree. I take it in stride and in fact, I find it kind of charming. I don't think every game should have a rewind, it's nice as a feature but if anything, I feel like the real solution is just not to design enemies that turn everyone into stone if you use fire on them. That's a more general solution. Anything else feels too unique to universalize and grinding is what grinding is. I'm kind of unsure to what degree you should let the player ruin their own game experience, I've said before that if the whole identity of your game is based on being HARDCORE then you should limit saves somehow but in general, with RPGs, I don't know…

I'm not sure if I find stuff like "Oh, I dislike anime" (usually they actually just say "I don't like anime" but if you ask them to elaborate or approach them with anime, they'll shake their heads at their idea of anime so really it's closer to being "dislike" in their head) when they've watched like 3 anime and liked them and think they're complete exceptions to the norm (and often paradoxically the norm in the ways they don't entirely like it) or policing over who is or isn't a gamer based on their choice of games more annoying. I mean, I guess Candy Crush heads saying they're gamers would annoy me slightly but I never considered "gamer" that exclusionary. I guess it could be NOW when video games have been pretty normalized. I mean, I don't really consider myself much of a gamer personally but that's mostly a you know…

I don't really condone everything e-celeb man ever says and he's talking like shit because he's got streamer brain now. I think "reframing" can apply to literally every genre with "that guy" since everything in games can be split between "movie" and "sport" because that's just the nature of the medium. Are JRPG-only guys not gamers? What about Nintendo (and fangame) platformer only? There's some implicit RPG elitism here but I'm not sure how intentional it is. He seems to think that MMORPGs specifically are free from reframing because it's about social interaction which is, yeah, sure, true to some extent but does every other multiplayer genre not count? I feel like there's a social appeal to just regular multiplayer games (big shock, I know) and it's kind of understated here. People like multiplayer implicitly for the social elements, not just because bots are dumb, they just don't literally RP (most of the time.) I'm fine with "gamer" being gatekept as someone who's an enthusiast and has pretty broad tastes but I think it's weird and disingenuous to put some genres above others because they're supposedly more "game-like", movie games aside. I personally consider those below your GTAs and Gran Turismos and CoDs and Maddens and whatever and they don't exactly fit the fratbro everyone's thinking of but I think they appeal to the spirit of "the guy who isn't really into videogames" much better and there is some overlap. They're exempt mostly because gamers™ seem to like them more than the frat boy stuff in part due to tribalism and in part due to some "high-minded" wankery about the potential of the medium and whatever. Game journos eat up both, I guess? I was going to make a point about that but who knows, really. We still kind of exist in a world where CoD is seen as the norm and as over-praised even though it's been everyone's punching bag for decades and the media circuit jerks off all kinds of stuff. Normie games kind of comprise of movie games and Gun and Ball games and some exceptions in other genres that exist because of presentation or being more causal or whatever. I can easily see gun and ball man being a diligent consumer of Mortal Kombat releases, maybe there's an RPG example but IDK, I don't feel comfortable in saying that but hypothetically, it feels like there's at least one who's a Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy loyalist. This is one of those Megidochan posts that feels pointless and I thought about deleting but whatever.
