marzichan is ultimately pretty close to stock vichan, even though I agonized over its styling and naming, and made a bunch of minor tweaks to layout, even bugfixes too. that's kind of by design; I wanted it to be simple - I think a lot of altchans lean into a sort of old-web maximalism, which is great in its own way, but I wanted marzichan to be dead simple to jump into and read or post.
anyway, I'm getting sidetracked. vichan sucks, and we all suffer when we use it. the site is kind of crusty and ultimately just not beautiful from a software PoV. so marzichan was never really a software-first project, it was a social/community-first project. and without that aspect of it coming to any real fruition (i.e., users and culture), my excitement to do any work on it has faded considerably.

As for why imageboards feel cooked, I don't see the growth. For older people, the format is too ephemeral. "Well adjusted" Zoomers are largely suspicious of everyone, and the current architecture is not nearly video-focused enough for them. The largest zoomer IB hub is purely dedicated to sadism

I like your vision for a gamified chan, though. Hang onto it somewhere, even if it’s not viable right now. In my deepest delusions, I picture megidochan becoming a kind of internet ghost shrine where people can post alongside Homestuck characters (AI-driven). Still out of reach as well.
