I guess this is the part where I go on about Scream and say that I had very low expectations and it met them.
I've never really liked Scream (in spite of Matthew Lillard) all that much even though I'm pretty much a certified "horror" aficionado.
It should be known that Final Destination and SAW are my primary domain.
When it comes to slashers, I guess my favorite is Halloween because it's the closest a slasher can get to scary. As much as I like the (emergent property of) "Michael is more interested in the motion of the knife than the stabbing" (which was of course just a clever way to avoid censorship), I don't really jerk it off like other filmbros. If I'm allowed to get #woke for a second, I think Dr. Loomis's assessment of Michael as "
dood's just evil" is kind offensive to sensibilities about mental health and also just dumb and unintentionally funny- sort of like his stupid and enduring presence in those movies.
Though Halloween probably the worst slasher series since everything past the first one is pretty worthless (not counting 3 (three)) even if there is some entertainment value in how bad they (maybe just Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers) are and Loomis overacting. I don't know if you count Nightmare On Elmstreet as a slasher and while they are very creative and diverse, the lack of rules drives me up the wall and I don't think they're consistently entertaining or appeal very well to "'horror'" sensibilities.
This, ironically, probably leaves Friday The 13th (the original film with the least artistic merit and probably the series with the least artistic merit as a whole) as the best slasher series due to its dedication to a high body count and tendency to turn into a farce (Friday the 13th VI: Jason Lives, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, what might be in contention of being the best film of all time, Jason X, Freddy vs. Jason) I guess this is what makes Jason ultimately the true face of slashers but I digress.
Speaking of turning into a farce, that's kind of what you would expect Scream to become but it kind of just cycles through the same meta ideas of the first movie besides the existence of Stab, which is like, cool, you have one thing but then that one thing goes to serve the original's ideas over and over again. I don't think anyone really likes Scream that much, as a whole. It certainly has a less dedicated fanbase than every series I've mentioned in this section (plus Chucky because
smurf you, Scream) even though, yes, I am talking about a movie with six sequels of which I am talking about the sixth here. I think people like the original Ghostface(s) and the general idea of him through osmosis (oooh, the spooky power of Scary Movie which probably has had some surreal amount in enduring Scream's legacy but that's a tangent for another day.)
All of that is to say that if you took all of the decent parts of the Scream movies and compressed them into like, just, Scream 1-3, you'd have a pretty decent trilogy. The opening sequence was fun.

I would say that I liked some of the writing but there are too many things in it that acknowledge that there are people my age in the world doing things that don't share my exact mindset so stupid shit is present and makes me exhausted. A character who says AI is the great evil is mercifully killed. I guess you can't have a good script in the modern world because you have to acknowledge the world we're living in which is gay and retarded. Also, I guess there were some modern snippy quips here and there so I can't even say this movie was immunized and "felt like a Scream movie" though I guess Scream is the slasher series where they say "fuck" a lot.
I thought shipping Joel McHale with Neve Campbell was him punching down (up?) but apparently he's one year older than her which is weird. She looks rough. And yes, this is definitely a movie sort of hinging on melodrama of aged plastic-faced bitches.
Unfortunately, she's the first to be killed off (besides a NO LINE NO HABLO INGLÉS O ALGO PABLO and the opening kills) in an admittedly pretty cool sequence that does shake up the plot formatting but it quickly falls apart. I've noticed a lot of horror movies have this tendency to have an extremely elaborate set-piece for a kill and then just kind of flow through the motions for most of the movie leading to a lower killcount which is a big no-no. My dad read the credits beforehand and mentioned Dewey was in it which lead me to believe an absolutely retarded possibility for some time, doubting my memory that he died in Scream 4 (which is about when my Scream knowledge drops off.)
They were, however, too cowardly to bring back Stu which is an epic FAIL. I feel like this was especially sequel baity, even for a Scream though I don't know, your mileage may very. They even have a character explicitly DEBOONK a Stu return which felt very wrong. (2)
Unfortunately, he didn't display villainous tendencies like Final Destination 5 man so I could not fully self-insert as him. He's kind of pointless. He says that something can't be done by AI and then he does the thing with AI and then he dies like a gay, stupid, retard bitch. I get that characters can be wrong but it was misleading in such a sloppy way that it kind of bites at the back of my head. Also, my blindness about my own features makes me incredibly hard to facedoxx 中庸 on my words despite my extensive comparisons and descriptions because nobody sees the resemblances I see when I point at guys. This was another scene that dragged on too long even though there's an amusing gore pay-off that would take like half as much time if this were made in the 1980s. I like it when characters fight back but you need the bodycount. So much of this movie feels like stalling. Unfortunately, two blacks survive for no real reason and I guess they're characters from previous movies, IDFK- they should really get killed off, I know Scream is no stranger to that. (4)
One is sort of a no-brainer because the secondary cast had been incinerated by that point but I can't even remember his motive. His misinformation would have been more interesting if it was real even if it is more "predictable." It's also something that'd incriminate him if his plan went through so… uhh…. The other killer (because there has to be two or more) is someone that I'd imagine would be very polarizing to Scream fans though luckily, I am not that guy.
This motivation makes slightly more sense (in that I can actually remember it) but it's like, standard-fare for Scream so uhh… kind of boring. (Actually, I'm objectively wrong here and this character only existed for this movie which I got confused by because I didn't really remember anything and she was treated with the kind of familiarity of a sitcom celebrity character injected half-way through the series. This makes her stock motivation even more boring but less contentious- which I think is just kind of objectively worse all around.) Decent gore out of it though? Still not a high enough kill count. (5)
I guess Scream sequels are very much like John playing Crash Bandicoot where there's this big meta crescendo (which is, the first movie or maybe the second, whatever) and then you just kind of circle the drain with it for way longer than the actual build-up and then there's… the same pay-off. "The killers think it's like a movie so the main characters do too" Cool, awesome, great, fantastic. I know "This doesn't need a sequel" is a very common sentiment but I feel very STRONG and RIGHTEOUS when I say that Scream is something that fully does not deserve a sequel and that all entertainment value therein is forfeit. It'd be like… I don't know, if Heathers keep getting sequels where people idolized J.D or that there was a book about it or whatever, all the retarded Scream shit. Can I talk about Heathers? Does that make me seem gay? Obviously, it didn't and wouldn't get the traction because school murders are a thing that exists while a movie 中庸 on a college mass-stabbing is something too tasteless to exist in real life (which is ultimately what Scream became about- Stab) and Columbine explicitly prevented the return of Stu for Scream 3, apparently…. but… I'm forcing that hypothetical into a hypothetical reality and so… I don't know, just
