FROM THE DESK OFROSE LALONDE
The Jeff Epstein saga isn't a scandal about pedophilia, it's about a Russian word called 'blat,' a Soviet-era word meaning 'the use of personal networks for obtaining goods and services in short supply and for circumventing formal procedures.' It's about a kind of government.
As with the large number of 'blatniks' in the Soviet era who made sure their factories got what they needed outside the formal state procurement process, Epstein greased the wheels for the neoliberal state. His job was governance.
What does that mean? Well it's clear that Epstein was an entrepreneurial broker across multiple public and private bureaucracies, helping organize 'under-the-table' deals among the legal, business, intelligence, and political elites to allow them to escape the rule of law and traditional conflict of interest restrictions. It's statecraft to allow a superclass to systemically escape the formalized rules.
The pedophilia and prostitution were part of it - that is obviously violating the rule of law - but so are the random favors Epstein bestowed. Like Epstein sending Senator Joe Manchin's request for a yacht, a request which came from the First lady of the Virginia Islands, to a random NY financier who might have one. Or working with Joi Ito at MIT and billionaire Reid Hoffman to restructure the Bitcoin Foundation. It's all about matching capital and talent and inputs outside of the restrictions ordinary people are subject to.
This kind of governance is particularly important in Soviet-style states, where everyone knows the rules are fake, where skirting the system IS the system. Epstein and his affiliates thrived because of the weakened institutions of the United States, institutions enfeebled in many cases by the men in his network, like Larry Summers. These men adopted multiple roles - advisor, businessman, academic, board member, regulator - and put on the hat that best maximized their self-interest and the self-interest of their narrow network at that moment.
The old world, where handing someone your business card meant you represented that institution, disappeared in the 1980s. Over the course of the 1990s, neoconservatives, neoliberals, bankers - ultimately Epstein's network - built this new social order. It was one where you couldn't succeed through the formal rules, but if you were let into the networks of trust by blatniks, you could do anything you wanted.
While all the specifics of Epstein's network are not known, and while conspiracy theorists often have crazy views, they have correctly fingered that the world of meritocracy and formalized systems is increasingly a fraud. And that the real government lies elsewhere.
In short, when formal democratic institutions stop governing, the networks of men like Epstein fill the power vacuum. Epstein built what Roy Cohn always wanted to have, but never achieved, because the then-institutions were too strong for him to break. No.6202

Social media was awash this week with demos of the new "Kling" model. Some are unbelievably good, some pretty good, and others just janky.
Many artists are quick to dismiss it because it lacks control. "Can you provide masks? Can you refine fx/animation? Provide 32b EXR for review?"
And I get it. AOVs, EXRs and fine control obviously lead to a better result. You won't prompt Dune.
But that's ignoring the big advantage that AI has: the longtail of niche stories.
Look at how podcasts replaced late night TV. Despite having no fancy sets or crane dollies over a live audience, millions prefer them because they offer topics that are more niche to their interests. I recently enjoyed 4 hours of two dudes discussing the history of Coca-Cola. An idea so terrible, it would be laughed out of every pitch room. But it works because it's low cost and there's 8 billion people with specific interests.
Similarly, AI doesn't need to create perfect movies, it just needs to create more niche content.
I don't think Hollywood will be "replaced" anytime soon. There will probably always be a desire for higher budget movies that we watch together, created with the control we all know today. But I think investments into these high-budget productions will shrink as increased competition make it too risky. In its place will be a burgeoning community of creators that use low-cost tools like AI to publish niche stories direct to Youtube.
I don't know where traditional 3D software fit into this future. Some days I feel like Phil Tippett witnessing the death of practical fx. Other days I'm excited to see tools that let you create without needing to know what a SMURFING vector is.
What do you think? Where will 3D be in 10 years? Hit reply. I'll read everything.

Retard idea of the day: A magical girl has accomplished her mission of sealing away the bad guys once and for all, but now she's no longer popular. Her best friend who knows her secret identity tags along with her new plan. The magical girl is inspired by an infamous TV show, and she can't just fight monsters in an official capacity anymore because they were all sealed away. The solution is to unseal monsters and have her friend film her as she creates kaiju snuff films that they release online as "fan films with incredible special effects".

You take everything too seriously and are incredibly obnoxious. It's not about Nazi Germany being moral or not, it's just the fact that Tatsuya portrays it as a defensive war, ignores Germany invading European countries and specifically, attacked Poland with the USSR, made a caricature of Edward Śmigły-Rydz that doesn't make any historical sense, etc.
>but BRICoids are somehow innocent now, even as the mass graves in Mariupol are visible from satelliteI never said that nor implied it. "They had a justification" is different from "I think it was justified." I do think the world would be a better place if America didn't join World War 2 when it did (or didn't join it at all) or helped the Axis against the USSR. Though granted, in both cases, I think it ends with Nazi Germany eventually attacking America and America still having to fight Nazi Germany. I'm not enough of a war buff to say whether they'd eventually win (I think Great Britain would be taken, eventually, which is, again, both timelines) but I don't think they would.

Homestark is pretty conspicuously void of situational comedy despite the format and a broad summarization of the plot hinging heavily on “They didn't play the game right” twice. You'd think the way the sessions
SMURFED up would be a comedy-of-errors, right? Well, not really. It's just kind of stupid. It is essentially an idiot plot that's not played for laughs and is wrapped up in predetermination (the closest we get to an attempt at both humor and PLOT is stuff like Murderstuck and Game Over which are both pretty awful parts of the comic.) In tandem with this, characters, over the course of the comic, stop making jokes (even though a defining trait of the Beta Kids, Terezi, Dirk, and Roxy are their senses of humor) and gags are relegated to someone being silly (as in stupid) and not jocular. Hu¢¢ie never really knew how to write “silly” outside of his own sense of humor (try and brainstorm some of the jokes
GREEN made throughout the comic) and he went out of the way to avoid the saccharine potential conversations between, say,
GREEN and Nepeta, which you can add jokes to but they'd have to be subtle (like a passive-agressive back-and-forth on continuity that often happens in roleplay when children want different things) or completely out of Mr. Ironyman's wheelhouse (which also goes for subtle humor in general to an extent- no, an obscure visual gag does not suffice, I'm clearly talking about amusing things that are 中庸 in subtext. You know, the kind of jokes that might actually make someone laugh and not just go “Oh, I just realized that.” For example, Tavros asking out
GREEN after admitting to murdering Grandpa is close but then
GREEN goes “If you're so confident, you don't have to keep saying it :)” which is granted not as bad as “Uh, you murdered my grandpa and are now trying to flirt with me!” but that kind of dialogue compounded with Tavros's incredibly unnatural way of speaking- which is a deliberate albeit misguided decision- makes it more tedious than funny. It's so stilted and blunt that
GREEN might as well have “said the thing that is stupid” but she doesn't because she's nice™. But that's one of the better examples of scenarios * dialogue in the comic; it's still kind of bad. Oh, but Kanaya is attracted to Light players because moth Lusus. Oh, you sly card, your humor is so nuanced when it comes to jokes that aren't
SMURFING funny.) He did write a GIRLS TALK in Act 6 between Jane, Calliope, and
GREEN and that's one of the worst logs in the comic and it doesn't even try to be funny. Besides irony-ladden ramblings, Hu¢¢ie never seemed to fully grasp comedy (even most of the situational comedy in the intermission is “carried” by the irony-ladden, rambling narration.) Hu¢¢ie can write some absurd scenarios (but again, it's always tainted with ironic self-awareness) but they mostly go to waste. Nobody ever tries to negotiate around or with the stupid. Actions and dialogue are completely separate, and, infamously, everyone lacks autonomy. So situational comedy is rare and even more rare is absurd situations that thread several smaller jokes into them. The most I can think of is when Karkat goes back to yell at past Eridan and him being too much of a tool to realize what's going on (which is one of the better parts of Murderstuck and even then it only amounts to mildly amusing.) A funny situation that also has funny dialogue which isn't completely dependent on “Wow, this is SO STUPID” does not exist in this comic. Funny situations are already rare. Funny dialogue is already rare. And Hu¢¢ie has basically no idea how to combine these two things which makes him absolutely atrocious not just as a comedian but also in creating humorous narratives; he can not write a story with humor, the story and humor are basically mutually exclusive (and we're being really generous with Hu¢¢ie writing a story because it's mostly just exposition and strict regimentation due to predestination, in-universe processes, and/or “plans”) despite how meta and “heady” a lot of the gags in Homestark can be.

>>6835>listened to musicWe've been over this before but it's pretty blatant that Huss was not a music guy which is why none of the Kids have any interest in specific musicians.
>read booksReading? Sure, a little, I don't think he was the little bookworm that some think he was because of his writing style. I frankly just doubt it due to the quality of the story; as a young kid, part of reading a lot is developing discerning tastes and that translates directly into juvenile attempts of "Well, this isn't what I don't want my story to be" which isn't present in Homestark- well, much. Huss does have the discerning tastes to shit on popcorn muncher movies from the 80s and """""""""""deconstruct""""""""""" heroic tropes but none of it reads like he hated some books he read as a kid. Also, one of the only writers he specifically references is Lovecraft and he's gone on record of saying he's never read him (nor Mark Twain) before so I think that speaks volumes.
>play videogames"Yes, but not the ones he'd like you to think."
He mentions a lot of specific videogames in Homestark (John played Crash Bandicoot.)
Being a 1979 baby and a second child, I'm sure a lot of his days were spent with action figures, cartoons, and NES games. I can imagine him dicking around with home movies, sure. But well-read Hu¢¢ie? MS DOS Hu¢¢ie? Probably bullshit.
Also, I tried to find out how old Byron is (which I could definitely find from direct sources but I'd hate to suffer through them) and found this, huh; whatever, I think the age gap is three years.

Yes, 3D is still relevant. There are more images and videos being created today than ever before - and almost nobody has the control they want. This is your opportunity. If you can create a better result with good old fashioned 3D, you have a skill that's even more valuable due to higher demand.
But you need try ALL the AI tools. Only then will you know when you could use it in your workflow. An artist with their head in the sand will spend 3 hours prototyping a texture sheet in Photoshop. An artist who dabbles in AI will know Nano Banana can do that in seconds. Guess who is more likely to have a job in coming years?
Develop good taste. Without taste, AI generations are like elevator music. Middle of the road, inoffensive, and forgettable. You likely started 3D because you were passionate about a particular movie or game. Lean into that. Keep a folder of inspiration and references as your north star.
Learn design and storytelling. As technical hurdles fall, design and storytelling will become more valuable. Anyone can prompt a sci-fi crate model. But if you know about big, medium and small shapes, and why form follows function, you'll make a better result. FZD School is a good place to start.
What other advice would you give to 3D artists? Hit reply and I'll read it.
