>"Who do you think it's appealing to in the first place?">Implies the ending would have some kind of ideological underpinning while calling the series "nihilistic" a breath earlier. Obviously, the dynamics of the setting don't align with his beliefs, - they say as much later- him portraying shit doesn't give it validity.>Is completely indifferent to the idea of story or character arcs, barely considers them just to dismiss the idea they're a factor (by using someone who is criticized for his writing as an example, while also calling him a hack)>Somehow, a happy ending, good vs evil, and a hero fixing everything is basic story structure or maybe he's alluding to something else that's even more nebulous There are good stories without happy endings, clear moral division, or even a central protagonist. The right's obsession with media being "HEROICS" is as tiresome as the left's wishy-washy post-modern nihilism (you can say Martin is the latter and that he's bad, sure, whatever. But you can
smurfing argue that there's fundamentally no satisfying way to end his book without bringing up specific plotlines or characters. It's proof you just kind of don't give a shit and are constructing a framework from spite rather than any legitimate, constructive introspection. We get it, you detest their world view but you're just preaching to the choir if your only argument against its story-telling is that it's reflective of that worldview.) Both of them are fundamental misunderstandings of the past though I think the right's is more pervasive. The right seems to be under the impression that all THE CLASSIC WORKS™ were polemics about the heroic sublime when really, they were much more experiential things about the human condition, sometimes the hero's virtue would prevail, sometimes he'd succumb to vice.
I understand this kind of
mewling when it comes to a sequel/reboot like K*rra, deconstructionslop (which Game of Thrones isn't, really, it's just its own universe. It's gritty, fairly low fantasy which has been around forever. It's not a pastiche that inverts things for "a point."), or certain genres like capeshit (I wrote a rant about how capeshit is incongruent with
grimdark yarnball and how it should just be heroes doing heroic things and solving problems creatively.)
But applying it to all of culture is so myopic. Getting deja vu here, I think I said this the first time it was posted but whatever. In the average right-wing Twitter midwit's ideal world, would the vast majority of culture be 1950s superhero stories with occasionally something like The Odyssey being unceremoniously released? (This is sort of impossible given the nature of how The Odyssey was developed but that's kind of the point I'm making here.) It'd be ironic considering how much they whinge about capeshit and base, morally simple low-brow media in general. Wrong kinds of heroes? The prevalence of right-wing baddies isn't enough to justify their contempt. Is Con Air not satisfactory to the imaginary tenets of good writing? If we got rid of Jews and
MOORS, would society just entirely consist of high art that solely entails how good it is to be [INSERT NATION HERE] specifically because of its values and how virtues are virtuous and bad things are bad? This is the kind of top-down approach to culture I find insufferable. If the DISSIDENT RIGHT™ suddenly had its way with everything, they'd make some of the most soulless art to ever exist because they're
besotted with purity tests and THE ENEMY. They have no strong values independent of the opposition. They see something they don't like and then say "It must be the exact opposite, like (at most 60% of) the old thing."

The fact that he didn't bring this up is kind of baffling because it's another easy "gotcha'" even though it essentially implies that all stories should be written for mass-appeal instead of trying to create compelling or immersive narratives- which is more or less kind of what he's already doing, whether he knows it or not.
