FROM THE DESK OF
ROSE LALONDE
:prose:

A few days ago, a great Man Against Time was lost, KIA while fighting against Putin’s neo-Bolshevist hordes. The world became darker and sunk deeper into the abyss of the Kali Yuga.

Denis (nom de guerre White Rex) could have led Russia to finally break the shackles of slightly re-branded Communism. A once-great nation, with enormous territory and resources, not yet entirely poisoned by the toxins of liberalism and democracy - albeit terribly sick with the virus of International Bolshevism - could - if cleansed and cured - become the kernel from which the new Golden Age of the Aryan peoples comes forth.

But now his soul is with the Gods and Heroes, awaiting the next reincarnation, the next round of eternal struggle against the forces of chaos and disintegration. Someone else will pick up the torch and the sword, someone else will lead the warriors, but Europeans of honor will forever remember his name.

The struggle against Chaos is eternal. Even though each and every Man Against Time will seemingly fail - until the Last One, the one who ends this time cycle and returns us forward to the next Golden Age - their sacrifice is not in vain. Each of them makes the ultimate victory of the forces of entropy less likely, each takes us a step closer to yet another rebirth of the powers of Sun and Light on this Earth.

"The blood of heroes is closer to the Divine than the ink of scholars and the prayers of the pious."

Glory to RDK!

Glory to the Rus!

Glory to the Heroes!

-RL

P.S.

Because of Denis and the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK), I am not ashamed of my ancestors on the Russian side.

If you are wondering what I am referring to here, you should read “The Lightning and the Sun”.

I am not associated with RDK apart from being a supporter. If you wish to help (you should!), please do so on RDK’s official website. Always double-check to make sure you are on their actual website (FSB creates fakes all the time) and using the correct requisites.

They are many things but Canadian is not one of them.

Off-the-top of my head, the only characters with strong midwestern accents on the show are female for whatever reason. Part of that "whatever reason" is that they gave the stereotypical redneck an inexplicable Southern accent because that's more universally "funny." In gently running my brain through old South Park characters, I'm reminded of Officer Barbrady and that they just stopped using him for basically no reason. If The Simpsons's main vice is doing random shit that feels out-of-place for the characters then South Park's is getting bored of characters for no real reason that you just give them the boot even though they could just serve a utilitarian purpose in a story without needing to be "funny." Actually, that's not really the main problem of either but whatever.
>>167
The point of South Park was that they could do all the voices because they hated celebrities and didn't want to pay them. They had enough courtesy to actually hire a woman and a cool negro though.

Japan has and had an entire industry of high-pitched people willing to say any bullshit so it, of course, was different.

I'm willing to believe that the alternate timeline, if Matt and Trey didn't do the voices, is a world where Mary Kay Bergman did the main four kids' voices until she SMURFING KILLED HERSELF. And then I think Sout Park would have just ran out of steam.

So epic spite win! :bird:

Really, everyone knows I hate these tendency but it's a ritual to call it out like samejoke or the burgeoning "I did a comic thing" from C*sh. Jokes are already not serious things. You don't need a second layer to feel holier-than-thou.

Why the accusatory (and melodramatic) tone? Do you not remember that I dislike Homestark, Hu¢¢ie, and especially Act 6? I don't think Hu¢¢ie (or Dave, for that matter) being gay is a good or even neutral thing considering how he seems to process it.

The only other reason I'd be some ENEMY to you is that you think I'm calling Huss gay to somehow smear his name but obviously, that doesn't make sense given this sentence so… :pikkard:
>Dave wasn't FaYgO until the webcomic was tainted by external influence much later
I acknowledged that that is an easy excuse in my full-post that I didn't bother to post. I think blaming "external influence" so much is forgetting that Hu¢¢ie isn't a smol bean helpless against the masses, but a full-grown adult who, in actuality, is stubborn to a detriment and could get applauded for spiting the fans and shitting on a plate (See: The Epilogues)
>the Hu¢¢ie self-insert
You say singular. You also seem to ignore the "sexual shame" that I mentioned and only zoned in on the homosexuality alone.

I see no point in explaining myself further if you take the basic summary to mean I'm some kind of nebulous ENEMY (which I definitely am not given the retarded context agnostic rationale needed to come to this conclusion.)

Even after denouncing him, you still come running to his defense if someone says something you deem slanderous. Huss can't be gay and ultimately it's other people's fault that X, Y, and Z happened even though it's still ultimately Hu¢¢ie's choice to try and appeal to certain people and do X, Y, and Z.

"1) Humanimals
2) The sheer amount of "haha gay" jokes
3) The fact that the vast majority of Hu¢¢ie-adjacent characters are gay. The retroactive inclusion of Dave is especially telling because he questions Bro's actions as ironic derisiveness of machismo homosexuality and Dirk just goes "Nah, dude, I'm just gay." This feels like coded but concise metacommentary. It's important to note that Dave, Dirk, and Equius aren't exactly comfortable being gay. Dave is obviously insecure about being gay given his late Act 6 sexuality talks, Dirk is weirdly cagey about it despite his circumstances and time period (which feels like especially telling characterization when you consider the other characters.) Even though he's cagey, he's also quite sexually aggressive and I've always considered the inductive interpretation that the Alpha Kid drama was partially 中庸 in real life events (since one is IPGD and one is Hu¢¢ie and the others are depersoned archetypal stand-ins for the romantic drama- likely because it split the friend group up as it did in the comic.) Equius isn't comfortable with his sexual fetishism but part of the thrill is the humiliation of it; I think Hu¢¢ie post-ironically enjoys hyper-muscle bara stuff and only realized that retroactively and used Equius to lampshade that. Caliborn is obviously, in part, a self-parody and he takes hyper-machismo to mean homoeroticism which is an easy albeit fairly amusing joke but I think it's also just ultimately representative of him as a whole. Bro basically had the same joke before him except it was more subtle but that's not saying a whole lot (even though people didn't get it.) If you believe that there is some conscious/subconscious sexual fetishism written into Homestark (hypnosis- which weirdly rarely affects Hu¢¢ie or his self-inserts despite the literal self-insert directly interacting with Vriska), I don't know why this seems so implausible to you. I can conjecture that it's because you self-identify with Hu¢¢ie but I'm trying to make as little of this about you as possible.

Even considering that Bro = Dirk = Caliborn = Equius because Lord English- none of the sexual shame over homosexuality (or even homosexuality/sexual deviance in general) is pertinent (the only thing I think is relevant is that Lord English lets Aradia fight him without immediately incinerating her because of the Equius part but who knows if that's a deliberate detail given how poorly choreographed the Lord English fight was) to Lord English (who desires to murderSMURF his sister- but that's just Caliborn and that's normal for his species) as a gestalt, even as his partial status metanarratively as the writer trying to destroy his own story with infinite stakes and causal loops or whatever the SMURF nonsense copes people spew out to justify Lord English's weak motivation and Act 6's non-stakes.

It's also interesting to note even if "Homestark's characters are iterative because something something Platonic Ideals" that the Dave > Equius > Dirk > Caliborn (or more accurately Bro > Equius > Dirk > Caliborn > Dave) thing isn't really meaningful beyond consistently embracing post-ironic homosexuality with a level of plausible deniability.

Doc and the literal self-insert serve different purposes since they are jokes about narrators and self-inserts respectively and Doc is designed to make people uncomfortable which is why he's a ped because that's an easy joke to make about an omnipresent omniscient character. The literal self-insert is used for jokes about self-inserts hence why it's only used as a wink-wink plot device and to make "hilarious" jokes about Vriska worship.

All of this is just subtext with plausible deniability. Sure, you can say Bro was gay as a joke, Dave being gay is pandering, Equius is just a joke about Hu¢¢ie's previous works, Dirk is gay because Bro was gay, and Caliborn is a parody of hyper-masculine fixation. But these are all, at various times, directly acknowledged to be representations of the writer himself. Sure, the consistently gay thing might be a long-haul running joke. But the shame and coping with irony part? That feels like it's personal and if not, it's deliberately designed to throw people off."

An ode to futility because I'm SMURFING off. :batter:

Collecting gold at the start of a run in Noita reminded me of this post about DCSS (roguelike) where this guy intentionally played in a ridiculous way to prove a point about how the game's design is flawed because trying to get every possible advantage is extremely tedious:
https://old.reddit.com/r/dcss/comments/54kdyv/psa_if_you_die_to_traps_you_only_have_yourself_to/
>In my latest game I marked every tile I occupied along with every tile I saw a monster move (or blink) onto. This made paths of exclusions that I like to think of as a kind of red carpet. As much as possible I tried to stick to the exclusions and only moved to untested tiles if it was necessary for exploration or LoS advantages in a fight.

Having to farm several hundreds of gold at the start of a Noita run feels similarly tedious. I never enjoy making tradeoffs between my own time and my odds of success in a game with permadeath. Psychologically it feels terrible and lose-lose because if you die the time you spent on the run was wasted. If I was in charge of this game I would just halve gold costs across the board.

 No.496

>>495
I agree that Crawl sucks, but uhhh if you need to "grind" gold in Noita, you're genuinely not playing it right. Exploring each level to a reasonable degree will get you all the gold you need for a successful run and if you REALLY need tons of gold for endgame reasons, there's much more efficient ways to get it

Also, the post is 中庸 because of this. It's not just that Crawl is tedious (it is), it's that they constantly remove core mechanics of roguelikes in a weird attempt to appease speedrunners and stuff because either 1) they bitch that the randomness makes the game too random, or 2) they bitch that the randomness has no effect on the game and adds tedium, and they're too retarded to just balance things properly. The irony is that by doing this, they keep making the game more tedious because all that's left is bump combat. They removed eating.

 No.500

I know a lot of the secrets and wand building tricks from watching streamers, but I still feel like there's a grocery list of about a dozen things which I need to have more than a few of going into Hiisi Base or it's literally impossible. If I don't have enough gold to at least buy a wand + reroll in every holy mountain, I don't expect to achieve this. This invariably means I have to continue exploring most levels after finding the portal until I end up at low HP and almost die, which I don't find fun. Going back up to the surface generally isn't an option either since that has many of the same requirements, and it's also an example of really tedious optimal play. Even getting the orb above the mountain at the start is tedious, and if you're really optimal you'd restart repeatedly to get dynamite or magic missile

>>497
That makes sense because it's more focused around traps right? In DCSS they are (were?) rare and can totally SMURF you by dropping you down 3 floors into a pack of enemies. I think they changed it so they're less frequent and just seeing the tile triggers it or something though

Ultimately, Noita is kind of about "can you learn to play well even when you don't get the crazy wand builds that everyone loves to post about." I don't love that aspect of it either, but it's how it be. The secrets giving you reliable backup strats is nice but a lot of them are "go back to the surface and hike forever," which is about as fun as just giving up and starting a new run…

It's been a while since I played and I don't remember too well, but I think I generally liked the direction they were taking the game. I don't think they've dumbed it down or made it less random. I like the game's design philosophy of discouraging you from calculating DPS. When I played after a break it seemed like they made spellcasting stronger in the early game, which I was pleased to see as someone who struggled to get far with mage backgrounds. I didn't really like the Zot clock they replaced eating with, but I hardly missed eating, it basically had no impact on the game unless you played one of a few races and wasted inventory space. I would feel bad if I was trying to do a winstreak and knew that I could avoid stepping on a trap using this absurd and unfun strategy, even if I never used it I would genuinely enjoy the game less.

>>501
Yeah… I think even though I'm pretty good at making the most out of whatever spells I find, I'm just not good at avoiding damage by switching between wands/items while dodging projectiles in the air which seems to matter more.

As much as I like the Raimi Spidermans (as any true zoomzoom should), it's hard to conceptualize them as wholly sincere affairs. They were intentionally pulpy, schmaltzy, and corny. It's just that that was never used a wink-wink-nudge to not take any of it seriously.

I'd say they were post-ironic affairs, different from today's post-ironic affairs in that they were played completely straight, deadpan (which was never a problem except for Spiderman 3 which people got mad at for being goofy when the entire joke is that Peter, as a dork, doesn't really know what cool is and the world kind of just plays along with it because he's so confident while you, the audience, know it's silly but still understand the stakes of Peter going on an egotrip. In fact, it uses emotional whiplash quite well.)

I read the first part of it, I think he updated it again recently but I don't care. Maybe I wouldn't have minded more Bard Quest, but what it actually is is a low effort barely concealed attempt to promote activity in his dicsord server. The point is to say something hilarious and get your dicsord message featured, not to follow along with a story (there is none).

I just checked it now and dicsord troids are literally writing the "story" within the screenshots and editing their own images, not just making action suggestions. Beyond grim

What I really hate about modern memes is that they're formatted in such a way so that inside jokes kind of fit into their mold and so friend groups are less distinct because of that. The difference here though is that in the original MSPAs Hu¢¢ie would find a balance with inanity and advance the plot while messing around, here there is no plot it's only the filler (which isn't even funny due to the state of the community)

>There's a subcategory of this I think are called "fandom memes",
Yeah, AIDs, that's what partially I'm talking about. But any friend group can become a "fandom" or use "fandom" in the only sense that matters here to make "memes" that are perfectly generic despite their contents being objectively idiosyncratic.

I should actually try to read about "real" memetics some day. Then maybe I can find better words to name my hatred. :watcher:

I don't think there will be a substantial insurgency in Venezuela, precisely because one cannot take on a religious character.

In Iraq, nationalists and loyalists were defeated ("Mission Accomplished"), and quickly eclipsed by Salafi-Jihadists and Shia militants. The narrative of Christian/atheist/Jewish "crusaders" invading Muslim lands was, to be frank, all too plausible. And the conflict became a religious war.

There will, of course, be some hold-outs and jockeying for power in Venezuela, but nothing like the Iraq experience. Maduro does not have a religion behind him; he doesn't even have an ideology behind him, as "anti-imperialism" or "BRICS" are just slogans for low-IQ buffoons.

Yes, you can just do things. Trump will get away with it. Venezuela will be viewed as a success in a few years.

And, yes, you should screenshot this and make me eat my words if I'm wrong.

I think Valve is only the "libertarian" game company because gamers in the early 2000s-2010s were an unruly bunch and they didn't want to turn anyone off by having filters and now they're too big to fail/give a shit.

Even with AI, they seem fine with only requiring transparency and I think they only have that as a policy so they get less reports because it's easy to have a disclaimer and instead of a no AI policy. And they need that disclaimer because of how rabid anti-AI people are. They're more proactive than people trying to expose NFT/Ponzi scheme games which is just completely baffling.

They're fine with being the cool corporation that pretends to be your friend because it's convenient for them. If the market was any less anti-consumer, they'd quickly drop the facade and start to match pace with everyone else, I think. Also, their monopoly would actually have to be challenged but whatever.

You deny the trickle down effect of generations that happened naturally due to VHS culture, reruns, and hand-me-downs (and of course the very direct LIKE MY THING that a lot of parents do) which affects most of the population because it is, somewhat obviously, mostly comprised of siblings and not single children (and single children are only becoming more common very recently.) You do this because it's convenient to the idea that soyllennials is a complete fabrication and TRVE millennials couldn't possibly have nostalgia for the 80s.

You'll only argue that one generation affects the other through the Internet (which is sure, fair, valid) but completely denying that zoomzooms can independently come to the conclusion of "anime bad" and then being bolstered by people who more think "anime is lame" is DUMB. You vastly overestimate the amount of e-warriors in the world and especially, the kind that would leave their echochamber to poison the well. Zoomzoom etiquette makes interaction difficult because they like to ignore DMs and have a bunch of DNI rules. All they need is "problematic" shit in fandumb and the echochamber starts bouncing. This is a waste of time. You'll never stop blaming the boogeyman. :batter:

C*sh really seems like, more than a hack, just some kind of p-zombie who exists only to imitate and bolster all levels of the mainstream with crude and brutish inefficiency. People only like her because they see themselves in her. Every failed career artist (>>153) can relate to her various failures as a cartoonist and vicariously live through her sycophantic nepobaby success.

I guess it's a window into a world where passion automatically == success. It reveals that that world still wouldn't lead to art being a more genuine space. The dopes who never learned how to do anything orthopractic would still ultimately under the thumb of someone with more proper training and a much, much more cynical worldview. :terse:

The easiest thing in the world would be to "write like Hu¢¢ie" but have characters that actually have defined personalities and entertaining dialogue while the plot essentially goes nowhere. This is such a Herculean feat that Hu¢¢ie never got close to it because Homestark's premise was too tight and trying to expand it just breaks it. In other words, he consciously SMURFED up at the point of conception; he made a bad decision.

So you don't do that. You do Problem Sleuth where they actually talk.

I prefer 10. I don't know what's actually being said, but I get the impression that it's supposed to be ruder. 8 has a very stiff and straightforward translation, but I don't think it conveys the feeling enough

It depends on the severity and while I do think it should be certain characters (I think it makes bookish exposition types more interesting to read because they're rendered autistic by translation), I think general translations should flow between a 6 and….. 8 :bird:

I can take things seriously even if things are awkwardly worded. If anything, it emphasizes the feeling of COOL JAPAN because man, how cool must that language be to convey this information eloquently. I'm kind of a dumbSMURF. :wwhat:
