No.161952

         >>161945I didn't say "more shallow". Shogi is more complex than chess, but more *tactically* shallow because pieces can't move as far and the board is larger, making every game positional by default. Positional chess also isn't fun but you can choose not to play like that. Shogi also has midgame defensive formations which are very boring/stally to set up, compared to chess which lets you castle in a single move and get on with attacking. Shogi is more "complex" because matches take longer and the board is bigger meaning more possible board states, but that complexity is not interesting when there are fewer ways to attack, it makes calculation tedious. Calculating the general movements and walks is especially cancer as well as piece drops (which can literally be placed anywhere on the board, how the
SMURF do you anticipate that without just blocking every square with a defensive formation), the most hard to calculate mechanic chess has is the knight but it's also a fun piece. Because calculation is more challenging, in practice players at a given s
cull level will not calculate as many moves ahead, further favoring defensive strategies in matches between imperfect human players.
I'm sure you understood all that already and have a coherent rebuttal because you aren't a dishonest
homosexual though

SMURF do you do it" is your admission that you don't get the game and therefor can't pass judgement on it. Chesstards want their entire game to boil down to memorization and can't comprehend anything beyond that, q.e.d.

I didn't find shogi to be "moving your army as an army" as much as "shuffling your pieces around behind the pawns so they end up in the right spot without getting tangled together", which was not fun, and also isn't fun in chess.
Chess openings are only emphasised because the first several moves actually matter unlike in shogi, and you can do fine in chess following general principles without memorising specific openings.
>>161970I don't think piece dropping is a good mechanic (crazyhouse chess is fun to play once or twice casually with friends but I can't take it seriously) and the design concessions they made to balance it are worse.
