🜏 Megidochan Monotype Tournament 🜏

Dates

Registration lock ‑ in: July 31, 2025 23:59 EDT
Tournament Held: August 9, 2025: full‑moon showdown 🌕

Type loyalty, 2wag, and cunning upset hopefully win the day, not pure power-creep.

Format

  • Doubles battles on Pokémon Showtime (NatDex Doubles custom format).
  • Monotype teams: every Pokémon shares at least one type.
  • National Dex #001 ‑ #808 only. Meltan (#808) is the final gatekeeper.
  • Regional variants allowed if base species ≤ #808. (Ex. Galarian Mr. Mime:✅; Mr. Rime: ❌)
  • Modern mechanics (Gen 9 movepools, abilities, stats) apply.

Pre‑tourney Declarations

Lock these in before July 31:

  1. Your Type (one of the 18; no switching. Sharing types with another user is fine, but...).
  2. Your Gimmick: choose one: Mega Evolution, Z‑Move, or Terastallization.
  3. Your Restricted Legend/Mythical (optional, 1× from the list below).

Restricted Legendary List (1 slot)

All forms count as the same slot. Darkrai, Primal forms, Mega Rayquaza, and Eternamax are banned.

Mew, Mewtwo, Lugia, Ho‑Oh, Celebi, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Manaphy, Shaymin, Arceus, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Victini, Keldeo, Genesect, Xerneas, Yveltal, Zygarde, Diancie, Hoopa, Volcanion, Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma, Magearna, Marshadow, Zeraora

Standard Clauses

  • Item Clause: No duplicate held items on a team
  • Species Clause: No duplicate mon on a team
  • Endless Battle Clause: No intentional forever-stall trolling
  • OHKO Clause: No Fissure or Sheer Cold "strats"
  • Evasion Clause: No minimize strats. Sand Veil, etc. ablities are allowed.
  • Sleep Clause is not enforced. Spore to your heart's content, though we may silently judge you.

Scoring

+1 pt per KO
+Win Bonus = 4 × Match‑up Multiplier
+Tier Bonus (see next section)

Match-up Multiplier

An adjustent so that everyone tries their best despite the odds of a matchup. Rewards adversity for poor matchups, and precise play during strong matchups (should maintain a high KO count differential to earn a gap)

STAB Interaction (you vs them)StageMultiplier
Your STAB has No effect+2
Your STAB is Resisted / You take SE+1
Neutral±0×1.00
You Resist enemy / Your STAB is SE‑1
Their STAB has No effect‑2

Stages add together; cap at ±6 before conversion.

Example 1: Ice beats Steel (Major Upset)
 Your STAB resisted (+1) & you’re hit SE (+1) >> stage +2 >> ×2.00
 Win Bonus = 4 × 2.00 = 8 pts.

Example 2: Ground beats Electric (Expected Formality)
 Your STAB Super Effective (-1) & you’re immune (-2) >> stage -3 >> ×0.40
 Win Bonus = 4 × 0.4 = 1 pt (decimal dropped).

Example 3: Ghost beats normal (dual immunity)
 Your STAB is ineffective (+2) & you’re immune (-2) >> stage 0 >> ×1.00
 Win Bonus = 4 × 1 = 4 pts.

Type Tier Bonuses

As we are ever an ally to the underdog, scores per match will get a final adjustment :outy:[tt2]BIZNASTY[/tt2]:outy: on the dominance of a type. Yes, it can go negative. If steel manages to lose to rock without claiming any KOs, they DESERVE to be docked points.

TierTypesBonus
SSteel‑2
AFairy, Water, Dark‑1
BDragon, Flying, Fire, Ground, Electric, Fighting, Ghost, Psychic ±0
CIce, Poison, Grass, Normal, Bug+1
DRock+2

Tournament Flow

  • Swiss / round‑robin stage: everyone battles the set number of rounds.
  • Top 4 by points advance to Semifinals → Finals (Best of 3 for this bracket).
  • Tiebreakers: Sudden‑death rematch (4v4)

Competitive Pokemon is exclusively enjoyed by insufferable metatroons. Woah you saw some stupid "combo" in a video essay and beat random people online with it? No way dude you totally owned them! Are you having fun? Seems like you're taking a series designed for children a little too seriously for an aging millennial, though. I see, it makes you feel good to "win" in a PvP mode of a game balanced around singleplayer? And they added more baby toys in the newest game, interesting. How's your transition going by the way?

What a SMURFING waste of time. Anyway here's my team which I didn't copy from the forums but I can't test or refine because the game is unplayable.

Also just me, I don't think running Mega Manetric or something would tank a person's grognard cred.

Maybe I'll adjust mod privs again so everything is nice an pseduo-anonymized.

When I was reading the ability names while choosing a team it reminded me of how the game was actually cool in singleplayer where you have limited resources, and made me want to play real Pokemon.

Attached is the only usable type effectiveness chart from several years ago because it took me a while to find and may help others. Unfortunately the image quality has degraded. For some reason everyone wants to represent it as a matrix even though they're difficult to read.

Also did they remove Stealth Rock and Spikes from the game, I don't see them available. I can't decide if that's good or bad.

It'll be doubles so entry hazards are less of a play generally. SR could still be decent, I guess (my team will be weak to it ha)

Yeah, there's like some "hardness" tier from Ice < Rock < Steel and fighting breaks it all. This has invalidated half the "physical defense wall" mons they've made for 30 years or whatever but I guess that's honorable

Is that a bot or you made a second account? I couldn't find an AI training option, I tried playing against myself but it's like playing chess against yourself, feels wrong if you know what the opponent's next move is.

I see you chose a team similar to mine but with some better moves I hadn't considered, how interesting… :munch: Not going to use "Togedemaru" though since that's a fake sploomer Digimon.

I played a bit more against netdecking subhumans and decided that the Volt Absorb synergy is probably more useful in how it allows you to use the moves that hit everyone without culling your allies, rather than for the healing. I also found you could use Sludge Wave with a steel Pokemon next to you. It also occurred to me to try a team using all the Rotoms but it violates species clause. :gnaw:

STAB: Same Type Attack Bonus. Ex. Charizard's Fire Blast will be 50% stronger due to him being Fire Type.

EVs: 129 stats points you can freely distribute among your pokemon's stats. Kinda like esper-leveling in FFVI. Cap at 64 for a single stat.

>>144373
I'm inclined towards individual pokemon, no. Movesets… could also be pretty fine tuned to perform "better" in matchups.
A compromise that might work was that each team gets a "benched" mon they can swap in

For the final bracket, I was thinking everyone can add another type to work into their monotype and waiting a week to restructure so things are fresh once more.

 No.144587

>>144274
It is myself. I though it was "okay" since I can approach with a mindset of, like, "snorlax wants to belly drum and oranguru wants to trick room" and seeing if I can I stop that or survive.

So good treated like a puzzle, or seeing what tools work yourself out of "check" position, bad for turn-to-turn tactics and predicting switches of course

1 KO = 1 pt.
Winning a match = 4 pts (with modifiers based on the type chart)

Works out neutral win, KOing all 4 of your opponent's pokemon, is 8 points. If Ghost happens to sweep every game, they'd earn 40 points.

Regarding forfeits. I'm divided, it's usually honorable to forfeit during a checkmate, but here it can be used to deny your opponent some KO points they should have rightfully earned.

This is why best-of-3 should be fairer, less "shoot, I should've…"

Full national dex. Even if people are less familiar with the pokemon, it gives more potential matches for themes (like, Gholdengo = Silver Surfer on a Fantastic 4 team, etc)
No more box legend restricteds, they crank the power level up too high for lots of niche stuff. I think the "mythic" 600bst pixies like Mew and Celebi are fine. Same with legendary trios, ultra beasts, the new "paradox" things, etc.

Wondering if I should lock this thread and move to >>>/tso/ to make another

Oh, and old team paste.

The throat spray trick is cute but I think the standard choice specs would've saved me a turn in lots of cases… The pros must test these things when they declare something "optimal".

The hitler quads…
I was considering shiny alcremie for Nancy, so I at least want gen 8 allowed.
Since I'm not so familiar with the gen 9 pokemon (or planning to use any), I'm fine if it's barred :D:

Except I technically made Groudon win over Kyogre.
>until they gave groudon that gamebreaking primal form in the emerald remake
Which I refused to use because I lived by the sovl and died by the sovl.

Wasn't the winner of THIS one supposed to decide the Legendary or have we retconned that to be the winner of the Elite 4 battle?

Holy bloat.

In other news, now that I can play in Doubles OU, it's possible to have fun and practise since not every team is using Calyrex and Follow Me
