🜏 Megidochan Monotype Tournament 🜏

Dates

Registration lock ‑ in: July 31, 2025 23:59 EDT
Tournament Held: August 9, 2025: full‑moon showdown 🌕

Type loyalty, 2wag, and cunning upset hopefully win the day, not pure power-creep.

Format

  • Doubles battles on Pokémon Showtime (NatDex Doubles custom format).
  • Monotype teams: every Pokémon shares at least one type.
  • National Dex #001 ‑ #808 only. Meltan (#808) is the final gatekeeper.
  • Regional variants allowed if base species ≤ #808. (Ex. Galarian Mr. Mime:✅; Mr. Rime: ❌)
  • Modern mechanics (Gen 9 movepools, abilities, stats) apply.

Pre‑tourney Declarations

Lock these in before July 31:

  1. Your Type (one of the 18; no switching. Sharing types with another user is fine, but...).
  2. Your Gimmick: choose one: Mega Evolution, Z‑Move, or Terastallization.
  3. Your Restricted Legend/Mythical (optional, 1× from the list below).

Restricted Legendary List (1 slot)

All forms count as the same slot. Darkrai, Primal forms, Mega Rayquaza, and Eternamax are banned.

Mew, Mewtwo, Lugia, Ho‑Oh, Celebi, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Manaphy, Shaymin, Arceus, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Victini, Keldeo, Genesect, Xerneas, Yveltal, Zygarde, Diancie, Hoopa, Volcanion, Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma, Magearna, Marshadow, Zeraora

Standard Clauses

  • Item Clause: No duplicate held items on a team
  • Species Clause: No duplicate mon on a team
  • Endless Battle Clause: No intentional forever-stall trolling
  • OHKO Clause: No Fissure or Sheer Cold "strats"
  • Evasion Clause: No minimize strats. Sand Veil, etc. ablities are allowed.
  • Sleep Clause is not enforced. Spore to your heart's content, though we may silently judge you.

Scoring

+1 pt per KO
+Win Bonus = 4 × Match‑up Multiplier
+Tier Bonus (see next section)

Match-up Multiplier

An adjustent so that everyone tries their best despite the odds of a matchup. Rewards adversity for poor matchups, and precise play during strong matchups (should maintain a high KO count differential to earn a gap)

STAB Interaction (you vs them)StageMultiplier
Your STAB has No effect+2
Your STAB is Resisted / You take SE+1
Neutral±0×1.00
You Resist enemy / Your STAB is SE‑1
Their STAB has No effect‑2

Stages add together; cap at ±6 before conversion.

Example 1: Ice beats Steel (Major Upset)
 Your STAB resisted (+1) & you’re hit SE (+1) >> stage +2 >> ×2.00
 Win Bonus = 4 × 2.00 = 8 pts.

Example 2: Ground beats Electric (Expected Formality)
 Your STAB Super Effective (-1) & you’re immune (-2) >> stage -3 >> ×0.40
 Win Bonus = 4 × 0.4 = 1 pt (decimal dropped).

Example 3: Ghost beats normal (dual immunity)
 Your STAB is ineffective (+2) & you’re immune (-2) >> stage 0 >> ×1.00
 Win Bonus = 4 × 1 = 4 pts.

Type Tier Bonuses

As we are ever an ally to the underdog, scores per match will get a final adjustment :outy:[tt2]BIZNASTY[/tt2]:outy: on the dominance of a type. Yes, it can go negative. If steel manages to lose to rock without claiming any KOs, they DESERVE to be docked points.

TierTypesBonus
SSteel‑2
AFairy, Water, Dark‑1
BDragon, Flying, Fire, Ground, Electric, Fighting, Ghost, Psychic ±0
CIce, Poison, Grass, Normal, Bug+1
DRock+2

Tournament Flow

  • Swiss / round‑robin stage: everyone battles the set number of rounds.
  • Top 4 by points advance to Semifinals → Finals (Best of 3 for this bracket).
  • Tiebreakers: Sudden‑death rematch (4v4)

I think everything (a short series of battles) should work fine with simply choosing a name.
It's not as if this showdown instance is going to stick around for very long, so no need for any PW/email stuff

Setting this to be pick-4-pokemon format. Battles will be faster and it's gentler to balance disadvantaged matchups.
Looking at the chart though (will finish tomorrow), things are looking pretty balanced type-effectiveness wise

Not for the main thing, that'll be roundrobin one match vs everyone with points for wins. It works out so everyone will do 5 games, and if anyone no-shows I can ask gpt to play a sack type like rock

If we decide to do some kind of elimination championship with the top scorers, that can go 2 of 3

Scoresheet as I set things up.

Scoring will remain as in the OP
>>143531

1 KO = 1 pt.
Winning a match = 4 pts (with modifiers based on the type chart)

Works out neutral win, KOing all 4 of your opponent's pokemon, is 8 points. If Ghost happens to sweep every game, they'd earn 40 points.

Regarding forfeits. I'm divided, it's usually honorable to forfeit during a checkmate, but here it can be used to deny your opponent some KO points they should have rightfully earned.

 No.148536

>>148522
I don't think there's a reason to allow forfeits since if you're losing you also have the chance to cull a 'mon for points.

Minor snag, since Earth v. Bug started early I neglected to save it.
… And it matters a little. If earth scored even one KO, they're tied with water
:melo:

If either of the entrants remembers how it exactly went down, kindly share your battle tale or replay.
Alternatively, we could do away with the "good type handicap" on water and award it the 5 extra points. It's not like Urshifu was legal here, so they didn't have autocrit protect piercing power.

Anyway, ranking for the gym leaders (strongest on down)
8th gym - Ice >>143712
7th gym - Electric >>143720
6th gym - Ghost >>143651
5th gym - Bug >>144221
4th gym - Water >>144613
3rd gym - Ground >>143571
2nd gym - Normal >>144280
1st gym - Rock (Roxkit)

From here, these characters can be retired and the elite four must be ordered, that means another tournament for the top four scores.
Well, I'm still thinking of the rules and potential gimmicks for this next set. My initial idea is no more monotypes, but strict themes per team.

As always, open to suggestions.

 No.148699

>>148698
I came up with 6 'mons representing characters from a game that I like, but I think it's going to be a weak team. I don't think it will be as competitive compared to the monotype restriction, but I should have fun trying to make the team work if you go with that gimmick.

This is why best-of-3 should be fairer, less "shoot, I should've…"

Full national dex. Even if people are less familiar with the pokemon, it gives more potential matches for themes (like, Gholdengo = Silver Surfer on a Fantastic 4 team, etc)
No more box legend restricteds, they crank the power level up too high for lots of niche stuff. I think the "mythic" 600bst pixies like Mew and Celebi are fine. Same with legendary trios, ultra beasts, the new "paradox" things, etc.
