>>157616Undertale doesn't really pass the bar because what people write about it doesn't go beyond some Saturday morning kiddy shit about self-acceptance and not murdering people and desperately trying to imitate the way it captures and holds an audience.
It reminds me of the old "Why I Like Homestuck" project where the vast majority were made by meandering
wwomen that ultimately went "This character has flaws and shows that life is HARD and I relate to that!"

Compounding off my previous thoughts on "Homestuck barely being about a videogame" and my problems with the God-accursed cursor, I'll go as far to say that Hu¢¢ie basically gave up by page 666 (significance?!?!?!?!?) and had already irredeemably SMURFED up the comic before then (basically as soon as Rose started building John's house up.)
I view even the Exiles as a "jumping the shark" moment because Hu¢¢ie quickly realized he couldn't format the story like all his others (because everyone realized flat planes and stairs would be the most logical option) so he invented a sideplot for it. Really, logically, the way Hu¢¢ie formatted the story should have been that the client cursor could only move shit around to make room for the basic machines required for progressing and they couldn't be moved up or down past their initial elevation (let's say this is barred by a gate.) The way houses should have been built up is by inserting a set grist amount and it automatically generating a labyrinth-like structure based on what you prototyped and the existing house structure. Now you can format it like Problem Sleuth, give more relevance to what was prototyped (something Hu¢¢ie claims was integral to the game and story), avoid the pitfalls of PLANES AND LADDERS (or Lord forbid the jetpack or UNREAL AIR), and actually have the comic be about the game. We lose some fun shenanigans with the player-client relationship but that shit was quickly lost and the client still needs to do things and you can contrive ways to make that fun (Let's say that there are things that only the client can interact with and the game generates puzzles for them to limit the player's upward progression.)
SBurb, as a game, is so ill-conceived because it adheres so strictly to the Sims formula and all the RPG shit is an afterthought. I think this lead directly into him spinning his wheels with The Exiles for a familiar plot structure and then trolls for a "FASTER AND MORE INTENSE" (George Lucas voice) remix (with the only through-line being Bec Noir) and then having to expand upon Lord English until we get to the final stretch of the comic where so much has been written with, really, nothing much having happened for the characters (they had an eventful day or workweek and then THREE (3) years of meandering) and we have to circle back around to the comic being about a videogame and how kids grow up based on their experiences in it.
Hu¢¢ie literally just did not think the basic premise through enough to tell a succinct story or even one he wanted to tell because everyone failed at being Homestuck™
All of the "postmodern" and nonchronological shit was literally just time-wasting nonsense aped from LOST because Hu¢¢ie didn't think of the details to make a compelling videogame.
It's why I think alchemy had some deeper significance and connectivity early on. It was like, the one thing he had a concrete idea of but even that was limited.

>>157659Possibly tangential thought since I don't understand what exactly you object to regarding the exiles, but it's not really the trolls' fault Homestuck went downhill as much as the bunny in the box "epic" universe destruction plot contrivances. It could be possible for the to story to have developed into something more character-focused with a large cast without losing Sburb's grounding, but the new characters came packaged with a grandiose unresolvable mess of a plot
No.157666
>>157665>I don't understand what exactly you object to regarding the exiles, but it's not really the trolls' fault Homestuck went downhill I'm literally just saying they exist solely because Hu¢¢ie
SMURFED up and had no idea what to do. I thought that much should be obvious. Exiles and trolls could exist in a perfect Homestuck but SBurb being PLANES AND STAIRS could not.
I said "ladders" before because of brain connections. I can't be bothered to change that though.

"Trolls ruined the comic" is a meme take.

No.157668
>>157665>>157666Though I do think there are some problems with The Exiles and predestination that I'd want to skirt around if I made Homestuck. It's hard to say though because I don't have an especially clear idea of what I'd want in it.
I wouldn't really want trolls, that's not really my ideal Homestuck, because I'd feel the need to write them out and what would I (or a potential audience) get from that?

If I had the trolls, I'd probably have The Exiles be on post-SGrub Alternia and that's probably the only way I'd have The Exiles.
I don't seem them as automatically terrible ideas but I've tried very hard to boil the comic down to the essentials and I haven't completely worked that through completely yet so I don't like having to think up how to make what was ostensibly added as fluff (because the essentials weren't thought through) back in.

>>157674>Homestuck has more lessons than undertale confirmedUnironically, yes. Homestuck is a great microcosm of the many follies pop culture falls into and is an excellent example of how you can string along an audience while spitting in their face every two minutes.
Its existence is a lot more valuable than Undertale which inspires people to try and catch lightning in a bottle without a second of introspection.
