Him showing vulnerability would make us lower our guard but it belies the real truth about his character's overzealous nature. If he believes there's no hope, he'll take drastic measures. If he believes there's hope, he'll take drastic measures. And he fluctuates rapidly between being agitated at his limitations and being resigned to hopelessness. That's what makes him a foil to Sollux; he's Sollux, but proactive- and that makes him dangerous.
So there's a smart and dumb way to do this kind of bait-and-switch. Of course, we got the dumb way. Hu¢¢ie can write perfectly fine characters in a bubble but they're also perfectly static- any movement they make rips at their seams and they have very short expiration dates in terms of their mileage (according to Huss.)

I was a bit vague about good "open options" vs. bad "open options." It's something I'd like to get into more detail about but it's hard to articulate and even harder to put it into precise terms without it coming out as some sperg commandment born from
very STRONG opinions. That's not to say some I'm some profound arbiter of truth but I think this is one of the least subjective frameworks I've analyzed Homestuck's writing under. To put it bluntly, there's improv with notes and improv without notes. Hu¢¢ie more or less did not have notes- the mental ones he did were fickle and abstract (obscurant joke bait.) To be honest, I think Hu¢¢ie was fucking terrified of putting writing nuances of any given character (pre-commentaries) to paper because he'd feel he'd overdo it or misinterpret it because contrary to the image he lets on, his mind is very erratic and scattershot.

As I've said many times,a lot of the best character stuff in Homestuck is relegated to introductions. I could talk about a specific example here but I won't. It is somewhat baffling how it doesn't translate into the rest of the comic. The only real excuse was "there was no time" so Hu¢¢ie pivoted to making popcorn munchers ooh and FFFUUUUUUU- rather than try and fail to write proper narrative pay-offs. If Hu¢¢ie, the fans, and his inner circle really wanted, they could have made something better, maybe not great, but definitely better by actually slowing the breakneck "pace" (nothing updates constantly being pumped out) and thinking about where to go. But Hu¢¢ie valued fervorous fandom jibs and gabs over legitimate respect. The only times the pace of the comic was suitably slow was to make big flashing key projects (the games, Cascade, etc) and Act 6 which was predominately based in spite. Here's your comedy, bwo.
