Genshin appeals to that with its puzzles and exploration without having to deal with any of the bullshit that comes from the massive server costs. It is selectively multiplayer + a gacha.
In this way, it's an answer to the question of MMORPGs. You might not like it from a consumer perspective but from a game design perspective, it's very smart. It can be enjoyed as a Zelda-y singleplayer experience or you can interact with (local, client-based) multiplayer.
It's a good model for this era when the MMORPG is increasingly a risky bet (because nobody these days seems to have an idea *worth* making into an MMORPG, even if there's an audience. Because, sure, a ton of people might play the One Piece MMORPG- and that's higher server cost. And then what? Copy WoW?.) I think Destiny 2 is similar. And then there's that other one game I always confuse with Destiny 2. Warframe. I think these are all similar. Though the veracity of that depends because whenever I look at Destiny 2 and Warframe, I begin to foam at the mouth and seem unable to process or register new information. So take the comparison with a grain of salt.
